Bern & BarryW.
Basically, most of us want the same thing, it's how we go about getting it.
Our views or solution's, will often differ, not because they are wrong but because we are looking at it, from different view points.
Any new shops would be good for Dover/Deal, including a Waitrose but no use to me, as I cannot afford to shop there.
However, a lot of the shops I can afford to shop in are closing, QS, Peacocks, Netto's, Bonmarche etc.
Unless we start looking at this from all viewpoints and start working together for everyone, things will only get worse but only for some, not for everyone.

You talk sense Gary. I also think you might be surprised if you visit Waitrose! They have adapted to the market rather well and are not as elitist as they used to be............

GaryC - what we need is a full range of shops for exactly the reasons you say, you are right. To get them we need a better demograph and that is why we need more well heeled people in Dover. I am not saying that we need only expensive shops at all. If we dont have people with money to spend then the QS etc will be gone as well.
Plus, well heeled people also shop in QS! Most people enjoy a range of shops and a range of tastes.

We may not have a local elite greedy pig but there may be a Mrs Bouquet and friends!!
What is it you have against anyone with money or aspirations? And it is quite an offensive monika, "elite greedy pigs". Having money, or even having status, does not make someone greedy, or a pig come to that. It is as offensive to pre-judge one group as another.

Oh and pigs are actually lovely clean intelligent animals - so please stop offending them too

That is well said Bern.
We can include pigs in the "one group as much as another" tag, Ross. They are rather lovely creatures!

I see nothing wrong with rich people or businesses that are successful. We need both to survive.
What is not right and personally, because all governments have not plugged this loophole, I don't care if they miscall it Legal.
What is wrong is having around 550 people earning more than £1m a year and are paying less than the 20p basic rate of tax, according to the Treasury, this is fundamentally wrong in my eyes.
Businesses like Google, Amazon and many more, who are reaping £billions of profit from the UK, are paying zero tax. You cannot continue to make cuts to Health and education while allowing this to continue.
BarryW will say its ok because its legal; Ross will say get the Government to change the law.
It is only law because so many of those that uphold it are taking advantage of it and whichever way you powder it, it is gross.
This stupid government wants to stop tax relief on the rich that benefits charities in the Uk but allows £billions to be lost abroad and even worse, they want to turn us into a tax haven.
Anyone that can defend this, legal or not is very seriously missing something.

GaryC - the problem is that the cure to the problem you identify is worse than the disease.
You have to work with the fact that we have a global economy and we have individual freedom. Only by becoming an authoritarian closed state might you 'solve' the 'problems' you identify but while doing so you will starve the country of investment and create massive economic dislocation.

Oh Barry...you are awful.
If a State which seeks to regulate how we live our lives is not in a real sense 'paternal', I don't know what is.
In that vein. Is not the most benign and caring statement, "This hurts me more than it hurts you." ?
You mention, "cure" Barry, but you mean 'contamination', and tell Gary (and the rest of us) that it is our problem...so tough!

You may want an all-powerful State to regulate your life Tom but I am a grown up and can regulate my own and the State should keep out of it.

BarryW.
Google made £700million profit on £2.15billion revenue in 2010 from the UK - but paid no tax.
Please explain why that is good for us?
