Starts tomorrow in football mad Brazil but clearly the public there have been against it from day one.
The gap between rich and poor there has been documented over the decades with those at the bottom living in favelas.
We have had the usual bit about the private sector financing the new stadia, in effect the taxpayer has had to foot a lot of the bill with the squeezed middle lamenting that they wanted their money spent on hospitals, schools, public transport etc.

Sometimes the minor teams play more entertaining football and we (England supporters) always end up being very disappointing. Best not to watch in the first place.

All niggles will be forgotten once it all begins. The BBC News follow their usual format of visiting and presenting the worst of all these places. Remember at the European equivalent a couple of years back the BBC went mad on the negative prior to a ball being kicked. Even Panorama was promising us that Nazi thugs would ruin it...nothing happened at all and it was a huge success. This one will be...or should be.. hopefully.
There was a great cartoon in one of the papers yesterday..saw it on TV last night.
It shows the England team going down the steps of the aircraft after it has landed for their first match, and the pilot reaches over, slides open his window and asks in all sincerity..
"Hey lads do you want me to keep the engines running.."

I'm quite looking forward to it as we are not expected to last long and it will be good to see so many youngsters that have managed to get into premiership teams despite the competition from so many overseas stars.
Hopefully they will gain experience and confidence for the European championships in 2 years time.

I can never understand the media hysteria that seems to go with a competition where we are not likely to last for long never mind win.
Being the non football fan I have DVDs and books at the ready, depends on the weather which gets used the most.

I am looking forward to watching as many games as possible and unlike some on here I think England may well surprise a few people. We have got a few younger players who want to win and have no fear of some of the big nations. I am not saying we will win it but I do think we will progress into the knock out stages.
Oh by the way PaulB which plane did Ireland catch or did they miss their flight?

I thoroughly enjoyed the opening match, usually a boring affair as the hosts are under so much pressure.
I do enjoy watching Croatia playing, always seem so relaxed and confident about their skills, they deserved a draw at the very least in my view.
Onwards and upwards, hope this will be a festival of footie.

More dire refereeing decisions in the second game earlier according to reports with two perfectly good goals disallowed and a clear penalty missed.
Noticed earlier in "Darvell's" window that they are showing all the matches on a 100" screen and serving the cheapest beer in Dover.

Here we are but for those who believe that size matters the Park Inn are boasting of their 125" one.

I've seen the Park Inn's and its a whopper.
Oh yes, and The Fox at Temple Ewell had a large screen at the last World Cup and Euros. Maybe this time too.

Just received this from my nephew in Australia - cheeky sod !
The England team visited an orphanage in Brazil today.
"It was so heartbreaking to see their sad little faces with no hope"
Said Jose, age 6.

Who would have thought it?
Defending champions Spain out by 8 1
over 2 matches, fascinating viewing though with
the hosts looking vulnerable .
