you can see the graffiti but not the missing panes of glass, eight of them to be precise.
we have two new district councillors that would have walked past it a few times in the past few weeks, will they do anything?
the choice is stark, either move it somewhere where it is less likely to be vandalised or have it scrapped altogether.

Seems to me a fitting place would be Dover Transport Museum, if they have room for it. It would fit in well with all their excellent mock shop fronts. Removal and transportation might be expensive though.

phil;
i do understand the move, but do we then give in to vandals an hie away everything the vandals then win

Or are we simply pragmatic and weigh up the risks and benefits?

not only are we giving in to the vandals at present, they are positively encouraged to smash the thing.
i like the idea of the transport museum housing it, the costs and logistics would have to be carefully worked out.

Although the Museum is a nice idea it is a shame that it has to be taken out of public use. It looks great. I wonder if a seafront location could be found for it where lil ol ladies and lil ol chaps could sit in it and look out to sea and ponder.

One solution could be to replace the broken windows with plastic glass.

no chance paul, at night there are hardly any people around, the vandals would love to continue their lifes work at the seafront.

Paul, half ther windows of the seafront shelters are missing, same problem it seems.
And every evening, each shelter has about four sleeping occupants, merrily dozing off to their night's sleep, all their belongings piled next to them.

I don't like the thought of this lovely old structure being moved out of its in-situ location, but with repeated vandalism what choice is left? The shelter is the sole surviving Dover Corporation tram shelter and it would be a pity for it to be left to be destroyed. If money was available, the choice is if you'd rather leave a vandalised wreck in it's original location or have it moved and be protected and cared for.
I've just discovered that the shelter is Grade II listed (Ref: 1070298) under the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act 1990. That may complicate any chance of removal.

Would be a shame if it had to be moved to a place which takes it out of public use, it would indeed look a treat on the seafront and would grace it beautifully. Ah! if only it was vandal free, must say though when I'm strolling along the prom, prom, prom at night I don't see any vandalism in action only the sleeping beauties!
Dream on PaulB, are you thinking of yerself there in post 7

by the time it is worked out what constraints are in place for the shelter by its listed status, there will be very little left of it.

What is your solution then Keith? There is no money for extra policing, and even if there was, an old tram shelter is hardly going to be a priority.

The Transport Museum seems an ideal solution, I can't see funds ever being available to protect it properly and it must cost a fortune to keep repairing it.
Common sense sometimes has to overrule the heart.

there would be uproar from the public if continual repairs were done on it at a time of financial restraints when front line services are being cut.
make no mistake if d.d.c ever get around to doing repairs a few days later it would be vandalised again.

It must still be camouflaged since the war, for I have traipsed the length of Elm's Vale Road and see it not. It is Scottish though, so there is that.

Tom, if I had it my way, a law would come out, unless there already is one, that would oblige the vandal to pay for the damage and thre cost of surveilance of the object, let's say for a period of 3 months.
No money to pay up would imply being marched to work cleaning up litter and whatever, if necessary with the help of two guards: up at 6, a crashing bang on the door, 10 minutes to get out and to work!

wish the shelter looked as good as that now, it is at elms vale junction, could be listed as being on the folkestone road.
alex
much as i sympathise with you on this one, nobody will ever be caught.
there is no cctv and the neighbours never hear anything.
