This is really just a bit of sabre-rattling isn't it? Reform will happen, it's just a question of who comes out better in the photoshoot.

This is a place that none of the parties will do much about.
now to have an elected house of lords would be fantastic
but it will be the same old same old,,,,,
if your born into it
or a friend of a political leader you will be there by appointment

While I do have some ambiguity about the whole non-elected thing and feel a little uncomfortable with it (a hang-over from a more democratic frame of mind) the Lords do often put a spanner in the works of elected governments of all hues, to good effect.

BERN;
if tat were the case(the lords)then i would agree with you.
but all the parties(including this cobbled together one)just fill them with there own supporters.
at a big costs to me and you.

No argument from me, Keith, it's what the Lords was created for in the first place. But that doesn't stop them actually doing some good sometimes!!

the blues and yellows are split over this issue with the the traditional wing of dave's party wanting to keep the status quo.

It's high time the House of Lords was no more.
Yes Bern, there is a semblance of something being done from time to time, but is mostly a charade. If and when Governments return to the idea of coming up with legislation themselves, rather than at present accepting White Papers ready drawn-up by lobbyists, perhaps through debate by elected representatives more reasonable legislation would be forthcoming.

maybe if the lords had to go through an election would concentrate there minds more.

Reasonable legislation does not, on the whole, win elections Tom, although broadly agree with you. Tinkering with the edges of a flawed democracy seems to hit the spot for many, sadly.

As with the whole system of democratic government we have 'grown-up' with it is all about Politicians and not in the least about the Common-weal.
The tricks employed at the top find their way on down the food-chain. If you see litter on the roadside, you call Authority 'A' to be told that it is the responsibility of Authority 'B', Authority 'B' says it is the responsibility of Authority 'A' and so on.
As Gordon Brown famously said, "I take full responsibility...the person responsible has been sacked."

Yes, it is high time we each concentrated upon the ONE person that matters when it comes to Democracy.

Lords Reform Bill debate is a can of worms.Once again Cleggy is sending out missed messages now he is saying he will not
go to war over the reform bill.
Tory right wingers plannng the biggest backbencher revolt yet and since Cameron became leader.
Lib/Dems are feed up with Clegg giving in to Cameron on so many issues...Tuition fees, Snooping Law,NHS Reforms.50p tax
etc etc.
Cameron reported to have told his backbenchers he is `relaxed` about the Bill....playing funny games again.
Another `U` turn? ......totally confused....

cleggy went out on a limb on this one, and now that cameron is relaxed then maybe we will see some reform.
but will it go far enough.
its no good tinkering at the edges.

If the conservative party couldn't win a majority government after 13 years of treasonous labour government, why would any body think they can win outright in 2015 ?
The only thing that could possibly boost the conservatives is to ditch lizard lips Dave, and get a front man that is in tune with working people and his party's core voters , the majority of the voters won't a say on EU membership give it to them.
