17:2767790When I was passing the Dublin Man of War in River near Kearsney Abbey I popped in because they had a board outside advertising a group called The Old Skool. These play Soul, jazz and other popular music and have been requested by the locals. The place has really smartened up and when the band plays on Saturday the pool tables will be moved to allow dancing. It sounds a great night for singles to meet. On Friday night there is another band playing called HEROES and these are the UK NO1 tribute band. Also sounds good. The pub has changed apparantley and is not the rough place it used to be. There is a massive garden and kids play area including a little animal park (petting zoo)including STIG the big tortoise.
Jamie was also telling me they have purchased the play area thing I think called Charlie Chalk from the Folkestone amusement park which will be up and running quite soon. The pub also has big TV's for special events and today were catering for a christening with I think 120 people. They have a quiz team in the winter and other events. Watch this space as I had 2 bad evenings at the Railway Bell last week. Firstly I could not join a quiz team as I was on my own and all too snoooty to let me join. Second I had a terrible meal there another night. definitely not value for money.
The Lydden Bell reopens on Saturday 4th September under new management who are very keen to make their mark in food. They are having a party/free buffet from 7 onwards on Saturday night. Another great place for singles to meet.
Going back to the Dublin..it is not too far from Kearsney Station and the River Bus goes right past it. What could be better?
Tonight there is more music around the town

17:5867799oh I am surprised the new man there yesterday said they were not any more but they used to be. Maybe I got mixed up with the management.???
I have heard from other local people that they too have not enjoyed meals at the RB and that is why they told me to go to the LB that is why I went but they were closed except the man spoke to me.
Locals told me that it was much better at the Lydden Bell and the menu was much more varied and they haven't been the same for about 10 months. I don't know as only just moved back to the area.
Anyway it has changed again now so the menu is changing. I just wish they would have those fruit wines again.

18:1267806The Lydden Bell is part of the Pubmaster chain, the Railway Bell people gave it up 2 or 3 years ago. The last tenants suffered a loss of trade due to the recession and general trading conditions that have affected many pubs. The new tenants have put a flyer in the Lydden Newsletter this month with their new menu, looks like they are going more for a pub atmosphere than the restaurant style it has been recently, with quiz nights, karaoke etc and a more pubby menu.
There's also trouble at 'mill with The Hope in Lydden, the owner has just got planning permission to build 4 houses on the car park which means demolishing the main bar of the pub leaving a much smaller venue which feeling is will not be viable and would soon be converted to a house. It's a complicated siuation as there's an owner, a leaseholder and a tenant, all wanting different outcomes. I'm a local and we just hope we end up with one viable pub eventually as there's nothing else here.
I'll be there on Saturday as one of the SLUGS (you'll have to come along to ask), but must say with my wife so there's no misunderstanding!

18:4067825There's some single men Anne but their age ranges are, shall we say, extended

going from 13 to 80. If you don't spot the crowd of scruffy drunks just ask at the bar who are the SLUGS, they haven't opened yet but they already know us.

06:5867903Glad to hear that the Lydden Bell is now open, I understood it was closed for good (bad).
I'm on the Planning Committee at DDC so won't comment about the planning application for the Hope, but understood it was just the extension bit on the end that was coming down and the development would still leave ample car-parking.
Sorry to hear the Bell is going to have Karaoke etc. I hate Karaoke.

09:3067916Roger,
"The extension bit on the end" is actually the main bar and largest room in the pub, bit of clever wording by the applicant!
