To be fair that was back when gin / alcohol was safer to drink than water.
Going back to my point the drunks were not sitting on the park benches with their bottles of beer (no cans back in the dark ages) during the day, they rolled out of the pubs in the evening.
I am not against the almost 24hr drinking laws as I think we have many more shift workers than back in my youth. What about all the corner shops that sell the stuff to whoever comes through the door and seem to add to an existing problem.

Eight people in Market Square at 10 am and all were drinking the strong stuff, so much for the token police patrols.

Early afternoon there were about 40 drinkers making a racket behind the bus stops in Pencester Road. Amongst them were two young women knocking back special brew one of them was in charge of a baby in a buggy.

If they do it will be the usual purge for a few days with a mention of what they intend to do in the local rag and then the problem will just drift back again as it always does.

Is that the local Rag that no one reads anymore?

Is Pencester Park part of the 'No Drinking ' area? If not it should be. There quite a few drinkers in the harbour area of Folkestone last week but they were less noticeable because they were alone or in pairs.

This morning there were three blokes around 40/50 years of age having a swearing match with culminated in punches being thrown, the rest did nothing but carry on drinking. This will escalate unless the authorities do something more than put up signs.

Didn't see you Brian, I had to go back into town around lunch time and they were still going well, more women than men plus a baby in the middle. News Inn that recently got their licence are the people selling the extra strong booze to them.

If that is the shop I use I will tell them, if they are selling beer to them I will stop using the shop. Best I can do .

I have contacting the Licensing department and hopefully they will go down and have a word with the shop. The cans in question are the nearest to the entrance suggesting that they don't want certain customers in the shop too long.

Great fun about half an hour ago in Pencester Gardens where 6(six) police officers were crowded around a lady called Clair, looked late 50s, who refused to stand up and talk with an officer, preferring to chat away on her mobile phone. Eventually an officer handcuffed her and read out the charges. my favourite was "urinating in a public place", those few remaining drinkers called out to the tune of seeing her tomorrow.

I read that the so called "homeless" man who sits outside Morrisons has a home up Folkestone Road, so is simply begging. The same goes for the one outside Farmfoods.
I have no doubts that this is true as someone found the Morrisons man a flat, she even offered to take him to see it in her car but he declined the offer.

Chief Inspector Mark Weller of Kent Police, said: “We want everyone to be able to enjoy Pencester Gardens and the surrounding areas and will do everything we can to ensure it remains a safe place to visit..................................This is exactly what we want. A decent. clean Town, that is cheerful and positive to walk around and about in. The sheer confrontational aspect of these drinkers, and negative people, have caused a blight for a long time. Pencester Park is beautiful, and loads of people want to use it properly. Please/please understand that Dover is a positive and lively Town. With excellent people in it. People from all around the Country and the World come and visit Dover. It is a Brand name, everyone knows Dover. Give it and us a chance to grow and bloom.

Rather pointless fining someone with no fixed address as they have no benefits coming in. The lady I described as being late 50s earlier in the thread turns out to be 46 so her lifestyle is doing her no favours.

About 20 this morning back in the usual seats making a bit of noise at the start of the school holidays.
We'll know later whether recent police activity was a PR thing or they mean business.
