Its time the owners of the building boarded up this doorway which is regularly being used by the local street drinkers and druggies. Its the shop doorway to the old MC graphics shop, very intimidating for anyone passing by whilst they shout swear and fight and use the graveyard as a handy toilet. It really needs fencing off now.

That was mother and son who were both released with no charged. The son being the one who resides in the tent amongst the grave stones. Local authority say they are unable to do anything about the drinking as the banning order had lapsed and won't be back in place until June at the earliest. The reason given was because they need more evidence of anti social behaviour before they can act. I was advised to just keep calling the police so they could build up a case, as if the Police don't have enough to do with less officers.

As far as the owner putting a gate up, he has been asked to do so but has failed to act.

Why do the authorities keep pampering scum? The owner of the building needs to get off their arse and do the local businesses, residents, and themselves a favour and board it up.A strong sheet of ply board and drill a few holes,it wont take long or cost much to do.

Its sad that people fall into hard times and their lives are not as they should be. Maybe these people need help but recources are too low. We can board up and they will go else where the problem wont be solved.
If only everyone could be kind and honest what a better world we would be in.

Must have been ten or more drinking there this morning, bit sad to see after walking through Pencester Gardens with all the poppies on the lighting columns.

Just a quick update
The print shop has been taken over by a care agency recruitment group, which opens today and they are having a gate fixed to stop the drinkers in the door way.
And the Council has put the signs up today for the banning of street drinking which was a long time coming.

Will there be any police to implement the ban though?

We all know that the police are stretched but having the order in place makes street drinking a complete offence.
That means that before if a call was made to the Council or police unless they were fighting or abusing people we were told nothing can be done. With the order in place that is no longer an excuse to do nothing. Any with the authority be it PCSO, Council warden or Police officer can enforce the order.

Our thirsty friends were up and about early yesterday and today, some on the bench behind St Mary's and others in Pencester Road.

The latest update is that the council have now removed the two benches that were used by some of the drinkers to gather on. I don't know if this is to deal with the drinking issue, but the benches were also used by shopper and tourists.

The sad reality is that the majority of the drinkers are not the ones sleeping in doorways.
The majority of the "day drinkers" have accommodation and are in receipt of benefits which is how they can afford to drink most of the day.
We should also remember that most of us are in the sad position of having minimal savings and potentially being 1-3 months from being homeless too if things go wrong.

So much for the new public spaces protection order signs to stop the street drinking.Market square was full of them at 9.30am all sat on the benches outside the bank, amazing that most of them were still there this evening at 7.00pm shouting, spitting n swearing and i,m not making this up,so theyve been there all day unchallenged?

Very interesting as the Kent Crime Commissioner and the Kent Chief of Police along with the local chief Inspectors were all in La Salle Vert earlier today and were encouraged to do a walkabout by one of our younger Tory councillors...
