DDC have decided to press ahead with the Sunday charges in the district despite the recommendation from scrutiny to drop the idea.

What a wonderful gesture from our wonderful council to our struggling town centre and all its traders trying to make a living.Well done DDC, another winner!

I don't think they had much choice in the end what with the charges in St James being so high, people working there would have arrived early on Sunday and taken up most of the free spaces.

Can't help but think this parking situation is going to be a major problem for st James development. I hope it doesn't fail but if I want that kind of shopping experience I'm going to Westwood cross. The whole 4 hour max situation on anpr is quite honestly stupid. They want people to come in to st James to have a look round the shops, watch a movie which including trailers which gone on 30mins these days and have a meal? What are they going to do fine people for spending over 4 hours on the site who are spending their hard earned money. Seems doomed to fail

It would serve DDC right if L&G (or their parking agent) simply waited until the DDC charges were introduced then lowered the St James charges by just enough to attract punters into the complex. They might even gain from any potential loss in revenue in doing so by obtaining a better rate of vehicle turnover. Punters might even appreciate the gesture by spending more ££s in not just the new complex but also in areas adjacent to the development where DDC Sunday parking charges will apply (always assuming there are any that will open in town on a Sunday). Wishful thinking!! Hey Ho.
I still remain of the firm belief that if no concessionary parking rebate from retailers in St James is introduced to encourage use of the facilities there, and no adequate bus service available, the footfall (or carfall) will not be sufficient to sustain the businesses therein in the long term.
Additionally ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) cameras are a large turn off for many who fear being landed with a ticket through the post days or weeks later when there is no recognition of what happened (to say nothing of all those foreign plated cars that seem to get away with it as it is too costly to identify owners and take parking enforcement action).

Why can't DDC consider a little pragmatism in their approach? Why not just postpone the introduction of Sunday charging until sufficient time has passed to enable an accurate assessment to be made of the effects? The majority of public opinion appears to be against it, the scrutiny people are against it, opposition councillors are against it - why not allow the time necessary for the right strategy for the town to be ascertained? As usual with this local authority, the emphasis is much more on "authority" rather than "local".

Courtesy of Dover and Deal Labour party.
DDC has decided to bring in Sunday parking charges in Dover. If you are against this you may be interested to know that following the informal consultation and petition carried out by Labour town councillors Ian Palmer and Charlotte Zosseder and the unanimous vote last night by Dover Town Council to oppose the decision, the Mayor of Dover and the Town Clerk met the Tory leader of DDC to express our opposition.
Councillor Morris’s response is summarised here.
There is already Sunday charging in Camden Crescent and on the Seafront; It is as a result of Highways England’s concerns over queues on the A20 and Legal & General’s insistence that there is Sunday charging in St James and therefore DDC must follow suit in nearby carparks; St Mary’s congregation has been consulted and are not objecting to the charges in Stembrook; Asking businesses whether the introduction of carpark charges is a good idea or not is not “proper consultation”. Apparently 4 rural Parish councils are being consulted directly but DOver Town Council isn’t. But fear not….apparently DDC is consulting properly in Dover on the Sunday charges and we have now tracked down where this is being done and how to respond…
The consultation notice has been attached to the ticket machines in the affected carparks. You need to give your responses giving reasons for any objections by noon on 15 March 2018 to
roger.walton@dover.gov.uk or by post to the address on the notices in car parks.

Funny this. On the St Mary's Facebook page there is a lengthy plea from the Vicar John Walker, emploring people to object to Sunday parking charges by writing to Roger Walton at DDC.
I run a business and pay a significant sum every year to park in DDC car parks but I have not been consulted.
Someone is not telling the truth here! Parking charges on a Sunday are only being imposed for revenue in my opinion. Everyone should direct their keyboard skills towards Mr Walton on this, after all he has asked for comments, perhaps a copy to the leader, Mr Morris too.

There are certainly numerous comments on other Dover Facebook pages to indicate that this statement is somewhat economical with the truth.

So will be any action be taken by Dover people on DDC action so as to counter act it because my understanding is DDC are to work for the people not against them.

Another thing is its the day of the lord Sunday and not a offical trading day so no-one should pay anything on this day. Were being Taxed, taxed again, fined for anything and charged for parking, its hard for a man to live.
If only everyone could be kind and honest what a better world we would be in.

As far as I am aware every day other than Easter day and Christmas day is a trading day with Sunday limited to 6 hours opening.
Small convenience stores don't have those restrictions.

Boycott all parking areas- empty parking areas= no money. Makes perfect way of putting your point across.

Everyone with a car wants free parking of course and the petitions going around demanding it are frankly pointless. As a comparison imagine your local council sending out a questionnaire asking the following:-
a) Do you want lower council tax?
b) Do you want better services?
Everyone would answer in the affirmative to both questions.

Here's the answer to all those parking problems! - Sunday or no
Townwall Street by St. James development
Also seen cars parked there. Footpath/curb won't last long at this rate. How about some railings?
Sent these to our local Councillor. Response awaited.

If you run a car (and tax it, and insure yourself, and pay for fuel, and book an annual MoT, and perhaps a service, and take it to the car wash every now and again for a nice shampoo and rinse, and buy a box of tissues to place on the rear shelf, and a few CDs and a bag of sweets to put in the glove box, and maybe a pair of fluffy dice to hang from your rear-view mirror) then you really shouldn't object to paying to park the thing, any day of the week. After all, with the noise motor vehicles create, and the pollution they inflict on our environment and our bodies, and the resources they use up, and the space they take up, and the fearsome injuries and deaths their drivers cause, parking charges are surely a comparatively small thing to worry about.
