I have said many times on here what I would do given the authority and responsibility to do them, I was given the opportunity to start them but had the legs taken away from me before I has the chance to make much progress, but I had made a start - and I thought, a good start.
It's unlikely I'll ever be given the opportunity again (not sure why though, but that's another story), but whoever is given the chance to implement their own ideas and move the Town forward, I wish them well.
Moving the Town forward will need the support of the local businesses themselves, as well as the Town and District Councils and other stakeholders - as they declare themselves.
Some things won't cost the earth, just effort and co-ordinating, other things will cost some money, but I don't believe the businesses and the Town as a whole, can wait much longer.
On another thread, I asked what do forumites (busniesses ?) suggest the share of the Mary Portas £1million (just over £80,000 each), be spent on - any ideas ?

I think low level , low cost high visual impact stuff , like the flower beds and general appearence of the place , improve the market and have historical theme days linked into local attractions and buisnesses

Thanks Sarah - those are high on my list of projects.
I know what should be done to make the market a success, but am powerless to act at the moment.

well roger
I won';t use this opprtinity to get into why barryw and his mob shafted you.
on the town itself martin and philip make some realy valid points, it's very difficult not to talk in a negative manner, but this can often do some good to try to make Dover a better place.
Dover does have a future if it promoted itself better
we must at least think positive

"Dover does have a future if it promoted itself better"
I think Keith, that the above should read "Dover does have a future if it was promoted better".
Dover can't promote itself - someone has to do it; the big question is who and how and that's where the tourism strategy and the plan of action come in.
If no one wants them, that's fine, I'll know then and shut up.
Roger
PS: "Barry and his mob" didn't shaft me, it was just one of their Boardmembers; Barry and the others at DCoC didn't know about it until I posted on here, so don't keep having a go at Barry.
I know I should ignore your inane repetitions about it as I'm sure you only keep on to iritate and anger.

Well the message must have got through at KCC and in double quick time - only three days after Roger's communication (post #7).
As I made my way up the A20 towards Folkestone at lunchtime today there were several "gangs" of workers clearing rubbish from the verges and leaving a multitude of stuffed orange sacks for subsequent collection.
It will be interesting to see how long it takes to revert over the coming days and weeks though.

And how long will the orange sacks be there?

Well now that is quick action,
Once the orange sacks are put out they are usually collected quite quickly after.

I have had a reply from Kent Highways about the email I sent them - here is their reply:
Dear Councillor Walkden
Thank you for your email regarding various issues in the area of Jubilee roundabout to Samphire Hoe.
To enable your enquiries to be logged and allocated to the appropriate teams, please can you provide as much of the following information as possible which we allow our teams to locate the faults more quickly and ascertain the nature of the faults. Can you include name of the road or roads which start from Jubilee roundabout and end at Samphire.
Precise location of the damaged barriers.
Precise location of the damaged brickwork and the type of structure the brickwork is part of, for example a retaining wall.
Precise location of damaged signs, the type of signs and how they are damaged. For example, close to road junction with Jubilee roundabout, heading away from the roundabout, 50 mph speed limit sign which is bent but the post its attached to isn't damaged.
Precise location of the notice boards and the type of notice board. For example, close to Jubilee roundabout, heading towards the roundabout, a rectangular directional notice board.
Precise location of roadsworks signs.
Precise location of sandbags and whether they are causing an obstruction to pedestrians or road users.
The issue you have raised with the seagulls and litter is the responsibility of Dover District Council. I have forwarded this email to them so that these issues can be addressed.
So, does anyone have the time to go along and find these "precise" locations ?
Gary - can you help ? Anyone ?
I will send back an answer, saying these will be looked at and precise locations determined - at least they'll attend to them if they know precisely where they are.

Kent Highways will probably come back and say it's the responsibility of the Highways Agency.

They may well do Peter as the Highways Agency are responsible for trunk roads, but in Dover it may be different - anyway, if it is the HA, they can pass on the info.

Roger how can you be so calm after a response like that from Kent Highways.
How many of us could give the precise location of any of the above, maybe it is too much trouble for them to get out of their comfortable office and take a look for them selves.

I try to be neutral and polite but it is hard and getting even more difficult at times.

I'll stick a camera in the truck today and video the route. Should then be able to give precise locations and pictures!!!

Perhaps we could suggest that the Highways guys come and TAKE A LOOK? It might get them out of the office for a while, and I expect lunch could be included........

Good idea Phil. If they drag their feet I can get one of my BBC TV news contacts on to it.

This is another case of weighing the pig to fatten it.
The effectiveness of the service is no doubt measured in terms of response times and outcomes per complaint.
The allocation of work to appropriate teams, as has been said, should be done by a professional eye-balling and assessing at and around the area of whatever nuisance has been complained of.
In times gone by, times when councils were 'awash' with (our) cash, and little accountability could be found as to precisely where the money was going, such tasks as those at issue here were dealt with (or not) on an ad-hoc basis. Work was found for the in-house teams to do. Now that somebody somewhere might know where the money is spent things are left ignored and undone until the stink reaches the parts any notion of overall responsibility cannot reach.
In short: we used to know the worth, where now we are starkly aware only of the cost.
Ignorance is bliss, bliss is happiness, I am happy...to draw your attention to the possible connectivity in the foregoing.
