I wish someone with brains would send the bloody green party to live in the EU with all the other idiots.
I am sick of useless pratts trying to change my way of life.
20 mph WILL INCREASE fuel consumption as engines will be under more strain at lower speeds, a bit of a contradiction to the green idiots party thinking isn't it?
I would say the majority of people exceed the speed limit at 30 mph at some time or another, so this will mean more money for the police speed traps I suppose.
and to be perfectly honest the people who most seem to be in a hurry around schools are the mothers dropping off and picking up the so delicate kids.

my area with narrow roads, too many parked cars needs a 20 m.p.h. limit, wouldn't be policed though.
roads close to schools and hospitals need a lower limit whilst many urban road would be safe with someone doing 40 m.p.h.

There are plenty of spurious arguments against the 20 mph limit but the main argument for must be the figures that show the likelihood of death caused by speed. A pedestrian hit by a car travelling at 40 mph has a 95% chance of being killed while at 30mph this drops to 50% and at 20mph it drops to 5%. That's justification enough for me.
Regarding the increase in pollution I cannot find any research based evidence to support this though a lot of people who see speed limits as an infringement on their civil liberties will cite it. I did find the following, however:
• "Generally, driving more slowly at a steady pace saves fuel and carbon dioxide emissions, unless an unnecessarily low gear is used". DfT
• When 30km/h (18.6 mph) zones were introduced in Germany, car drivers changed gear 12% less often, braked 14% less often and required 12% less fuel
• The AA's report, Fuel For Thought (Jan 2008) "Along shorter roads with junctions and roundabouts, limiting acceleration to up to 20 mph reduces fuel consumption"
In contrast to the outcry that often surrounds the mention of a 20 mph speed limit:
• "The government has admitted that its proposal to increase the speed limit on motorways to 80mph would lead to more pollution and increase the risk of road deaths". "I read your post with interest and hope I can address some of your points here.
Firstly I understand the disappointment about the change to the national concessionary scheme for coach travel. As you know the public finances are in a dreadful state and savings have to be made. However local concessionary fares will be maintained so that the elderly and disabled can continue to use the local bus network at a reduced cost.
I will be fighting the ruling regarding eastern European migrants (I must make clear it will not be all immigrants) being able to claim benefits after three months, though as this is imposed on us by the EU, it will be tricky. I should make you aware that I am in favour of a renegotiation of our relationship with the EU for precisely reasons such as this.
I am very sceptical of the increasing push towards an all-encompassing EU state, and dislike the way it has begun to erode our sovereignty and laws. However I do agree with the EU as a trade body and the way it boosts our economy. I do not believe we need the rest of it - the Commission, all these laws and the prohibitive cost, so I can sympathise wholeheartedly with your viewpoint.
There will be a debate in the House of Commons in a couple of weeks on whether there might be a referendum so we will see what happens after that, but as I have said, I do hope that renegotiation happens, and as soon as is possible."

The EU one is interesting. I want out of the EU but the route out is a tricky one so a renegotiation of of our position is the way forward to a Swiss-like relationship with the EU. That, put to a referendum, would be less likely to 'scare the horses' than a simplistic in/out vote that could drastically backfire and end up locking us in. - 19 October 2011 09:30132134Thank you for your time Charlie its good of you to respond

19 October 2011 11:14132150as regards to conessionary bus passes,although i have reached the age of 60 i am uable to apply for one due to rule changes,i will have to wait untill january 2013 before i can apply for one,i do belive that collete is in the same boat as me.

the issue of coach travel is very different, i believe a loophole is being closed that enabled people to use national express.

he won the discrimination case and the rules were changed here and the same had to apply for any travel concessions on offer. - Brian Dixon
