The USA did a good job; we will see an upsurge in attacks and will be on heightened alert; this was a necessary evil that had to be done for the sake of justice for those impacted on by Bin Ladens organisation; it is regrettable but understandable that the US citizens celebrated, and they have shown remarkable restraint thus far in fact given that, for example, their counterparts in the East took to the streets and burned effigies of Jade Goody because she was poorly socially skilled and said some stupid stuff (for goodness sake!), and Islamists in our own country have burned a Poppy during Remembrance week, and terrorists committed 9/11 which must rank as the most appalling single aggressive act and included many nationalities, women, children. Yes, we will see some counter-spin by the terrorists, but I think we can be confident if Obama has risked global statements that the job has been done. And I am glad, God forgive me.

I mean, weren't our soldiers supposed to be fighting an Afgunistan because of him, and didn't hundreds get blown up, killed or maimed, in the process?
I wish they could be allowed home now.

alex
politicians sloganise at the start of wars then alter the slogan to suit themselves.
the classic was the weapons of mass what not in iraq, when they were not found it was suddenly remembered it was all about getting rid of the president.
our present involvement was in libya was about operating a no fly zone and nothing else, no ground troops ever.
no we hear that nothing can be ruled in or out.

A good article here that answers Howards point about whether Bin laden should have been quietly buried at sea or handed over for a muslim burial. Interesting viewpoint that rings very true.

We'll all have to wait and see what the next chapter is now.
When all forumites are gone as we know it, terrorism will still be alive I'm afraid.

No, Ian! I have a right to call into memory that British soldiers were sent to Afghanistan to fight Bin Laden. Now that he's dead, are you telling any opponents to keep quiet, so that the war can go merrily on?
Sorry, it don't work that way! This is a democracy with freefom of speech!
(Something you claim British soldiers are fighting for?) Well than respect it!

No, our soldiers were sent to Afghanistan to fight the Taliban, a different bunch. Osama was one of the original mujahideen whom we supported against the Soviet occupation but left to set up his own shop during the first Gulf war. Since then he may have been in and out of Afghanistan but I don't think he has been back since the Americans destroyed his hideout at Tora Bora.

Brave man, Bin Laden.
I see he used his wife as a human shield.

there is a strong body of opinion that says the americans killed bin liner on the spot as they did not want him spouting off in court about the help he got from the americans back in the eighties.

It's well documented that both American and British special forces helped -and trained- the mujahideen during the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan. The presence of Western troops on holy Saudi soil during the first gulf war turned OBL into a renegade.

just to lighten things up on election night has anyone heard any good bin laden jokes?
my favourite so far is "who said you cannot take the bin out on a bank holiday".

Bin's passport had expired, so how could they have taken him to America?
There was no way of giving him an entry visa.
