The US President announced that the most hated and hunted man in the world has been shot dead in Islamabad by US Special Forces.

The news is breaking as I type and apparently the US military are in possession of his body. According to some reports they are dancing on the streets in some US cities.

You beat me to it Marek - great news for the whole world.
From the Daily Telegraph
"Mr Obama, addressing the United States and people across the globe shortly after 11.30pm on a Sunday night from the East Room of the White House, said that the Saudi-born Islamist had been killed on Sunday in an American ground operation in Abbotabad, Pakistan. He concluded: "Justice has been done."
As crowds gathered outside the White House waving American flags and singing "The Star Spangled Banner", Mr Obama confirmed the news that had already leaked out, stating that "the United States has conducted an operation that killed Osama bin Laden, the leader of al-Qaeda".
The American president said that "a small team of Americans" had killed bin Laden and taken custody of his body following a firefight earlier on Sunday. He disclosed that the original intelligence about his whereabouts had been briefed to him last August and that he had authorised the operation last week.
His wording, and mention of Leon Panetta, the CIA director, strongly suggested that CIA operatives, possibly working with US Special Forces troops, crossed the Afghanistan-Pakistan border to kill the al-Qaeda leader. No Americans were injured or killed.
Mr Obama hailed the "tireless and heroic work" of the American military and intelligence agencies and thanked Pakistan for its assistance in the operation".
I hope that now that the head of the tiger has been cut off, less terrorism will occur - we live in hope.

A photo of the dead terrorist is on the web but I decided not to copy and paste for the DF as it's pretty horrific. Early morning news have yet to decide whether to broadcast the image or not.

Remember that he built a large organisation which operates almost world-wide. His money is still dedicated to the cause and there are hundreds of his senior lieutenants in place. Celebrate by all means but I believe we shall be in for a barrage of terrorist outrages specifically to avenge his death.

Peter is right of course. Bin Laden's death is good news but it would have been better if he had been captured for interrogation before killing him. Maybe in reality they did!!! Lets hope so. If so and if they got information out of him they will 'roll-up' what remains of his organisation.

Bin Laden Dead. Should be good news but the repercussions will come and not just from his organisation. Pakistan is a divided Islamic country and this operation was carried out by Americans (would have been better had it been a joint operation with Pakistan but that would have split the country even more).
His body was taken by the Americans and, according to Sky News, buried at sea, Islamic groups will soon be up in arms that it was not given the "proper" rites. Will the war in Aghanistan or Iraq stop? By all accounts Saddam Husein hated Bin Laden.
Maybe a small celebration for the death of a man advertised as "the most hated man on Earth" but keep your powder dry, there is more to fear from his memory than from his body.

Chris - you make a reasonable point but it is better than providing a martyrs grave and a focus for the extremists. The war against terror is far from over but I hope they managed to get information out of that raid which will be useful, far more important than just killing Bin Laden.

At least for the moment it will give thousands of people peace of mind.
It is far from over.
As Barry says lets hope the raid gathered some useful info, the news says they where in the compound for 40 minutes. A long time for a tap raid like that, so lets hope.
It just makes me wonder why he was living were he was and no one knew.

i think the americans have done the right thing, a shrine to him to would have recruited more terrorists.
the problem is that he has left behind a great organisation with links in almost every country of the world, i doubt that the command structure will be affected by his death.
still a very long haul to cure the problem.

I don't think it will ever be that simple. A quick search on the images already shows one of an injured (or dead) Bin Laden with very dark hair and beard and yet another of a grey haired Bin Laden in a bed, under a presidential seal, hooked up to life support. This is going to get more complicated by the hour.

The internet is a powerful disseminator of disinformation, Al-Quaeda and its associates will be pushing out a whole range of stuff from "they got the wrong man", through pictures of him allegedly being tortured by US forces to gruesome pictures of corpses; all with the express intention of inciting hatred against the West and the US in particular as well as encouraging recruitment. Also as Peter and others have pointed out this will not stop terrorist outrages, if anything it will signal the start of a new campaign against Western targets.
Clearly no real cause for celebration and no reason to feel any safer

Having now read through a lot of the reportage on the web and viewed numerous bits of video a few further observations
- if it was disgusting and nauseating to see people cheering in the street in Islamic countries post 9/11 isn't it just as disgusting and nauseating to see crowds of people doing the same in the US
- are our PM and the Foreign Office fools? Didn't he recently make an apology and a significant aid payment) to Pakistan following accusations that they harboured terrorists. Yet Bin-Laden was found in a large property less than half a mile from the Pakistan Military Academy (their Sandhurst/West Point) ...
- given recent popular uprisings in Arab states had the International Jihad ceased to have any real relevance to ordinary Arabs and therefore by extension proponents of such ceased to have their "pulling" power for the disaffected?
- on the other hand will the creation of a "martyr" to the cause actually increase the relevance of Al-Quaeda and its associated organisations amongst the disaffected islamic youth of the world?

Those who think the Al-Quaeda problem will ease are wrong, the fanatics think they have a just cause and will carry on.
Sadly the IRA fanatics have raised their profile again so will Al-Quaeda.

all seems a bit muzzy with all the info coming out, lets not forget the Americans had more than this chance to get rid of him and didnt do it, it dont make sense what proof do we have thats its him? and saldy as the posts above say we far from safe from these fanatics .

When he was alive the world was unsafe it could just have become a little bit safer without its fanantical leader.

But he has god knows how many followers who would still live out their daft ways if he is dead or alive

they are now saying that the picture of him is an old one that has been circulating on the interent for two years and is now considered to be a fake by many.
osama has been out of touch with his followers for many years and seems to have been a figurehead rather than a leader.
