pity they did not abstain in 1939, would have saved a lot of unpleasantness.

Marek, what I meant was, the German government have stated that they will not get involved in any military action.
There is no EU decision to attack Libya, until now at any rate.

The Germans have backed the action late today following the gathering of leaders in Paris. Alex the US have regarded this initiative all along as an EU initiative. They often refer in their speeches in Washington and so on to this kind of initiative as being from the EU. It may be just some EU members involved in the action but It gives the momentum greater gravitas to have the US refer to the EU in this way..for both them and us.

Oh how I would have preferred to see a no-fly zone like this one!
Ah well, let's brave it through then and keep the spirits up!

Last nights American news are hailing the French led iniative military action against Libya and the speed at which the Allied forces have intervened. Hague lost the iniative and should now lose his job over his handling of this affair. Is he on holiday or something or just quaffing his 'usual' 14 pints of working class bitter in some dark satanic pub in Yorkshire?

Alex
You are quite right the correct terminology should be 'No Flying Zone'.

British jets and a submarine have fired missiles at Libyan military sites in a UN-backed international operation to enforce a no-fly zone, Just read this on the BBC Newsline.

Hopefully it will lead to a democratic state but at what cost?

democracy is unlikely to be the end product, the country is seperated on tribal lines.
if the rebels gain control we can expect them to target civilians in tripoli.

seen too many of these situations marek, there is no plan what to do when the no fly zone is in operation.
listened to many independent analysts, both civilian and military, they foresee problems.

This looks a bad one! The secretary general of the Arab League has already said that the no-fly zone as it has been carried out is not what the UN mandate called for, or what the Arab League asked for! Not 24 hours on, and they are now criticising the western countries for this!
This is war! And the Arab League is already falling out!

I think Dave Blue has never been anywhere near an army base, and has no idea what Strategy is. Where is he leading our Country?

on the news today it appears the arab league made up of many countries has just one member whom wants to help out gadaffitti by giving free way out of libya
but in the main rest of the arab countries want to see ghadaffi gone

I am wondering how it will sit with Libyan people, who are anti foreign intervention because of how they suffered under axis occupation, having Italian jets in the sky firing missiles.
Politics, it seems to me, for years, or all too long, has been concerned with right or left instead of right or wrong.

the issue with the arab league is not about the colonel it is about a no fly zone.
they categorically were clear that they wanted this to happen yesterday, not today though.
could be the feedback from their disgruntled populations, interestingly the qataris have announced the deployment of 4 aircraft today.
