One ought to know a bit about natural alcohol processes in drinks, Keith.
Beer and cider cannot just have a high percentage of alcohol and be dirt-cheap. Same goes for any other alcoholic drink.
It'd be interesting to know what fermenting processes are being used in cheap drinks.

We went in the "First and Last" a couple of years ago, well after the ban. They were all smoking including the landlord. We were ushered into a corner and asked if we would be smoking. When we said "No" we were led to a grotty corner at the back. We felt very welcome as you can imagine. He later quizzed us about whether we would be reporting him. We had no intention of reporting him, but we never went back, no surprise there.
It is a trend in failing pubs, I think, to pander to the remaining locals, alienate everybody else and the rest is history.

The First and Last is closed now.
If they start banning cigarettes and tobacco in private residences, then we'll have rows of empty houses too, not just pubs.
Somewhere the PC brigade has to stop.

Pubs are so much better now without that foul smoke. One of very few good pieces of legislation passed by the last government.
That was not a nanny state measure but one needed because of selfish and ignorant smokers who made restaurants and pubs a misery for those who did not want their clothes smelling terribly or to choke on smoke. Its a bit pathetic this continued whining from smokers who are incapable of going without a fag with a pint. Get over it and enjoy a drink in clean air.
Many pubs are going out of business but that trend did not start with the smoking ban, it was going on well before that. Cheap supermarket loss leading alcohol is a bigger menace to pubs and maybe the minimum pricing will help the pub trade.

Its over taxing drink that's killing pubs ,And drink driving in the country pubs ,
An old industry and big part of British coulter ,totally being destroyed by the maggots in Westminster
Ukip could ad the slashing of tax on pubs and the decupling of brewery ties,
Would create a vigorous free pub trade with big job creation,
The smoking ban is good as smoking affects others around them,
External smoking shelters could have been accommodated for the addicts

we all know what is good and what is bad for us, most people do a mixture of the two.
it is not the job of government to decide what life style we choose i we remain within the law.

Agreed Howard, as long as it does not affect other people, smoking for instance, I really don't care if people choose to smoke behind closed doors or where it doesn't impinge on other people. It would be wrong to legislate against it in for consenting adults in private!

Barry is undergoing treatment to deal with his incessant appealing to authority. Always believe what the experts say. Five a day, 22 units of alcohol, one cigarette can kill, passive smoking kills millions, austerity works, let's renegotiate with the eu blah, blah, blah, it's all the same. If it's in the Telegraph it must be right.

Philip - I could not care a toss what the experts say....
Smoking is simply a disgusting habit.
I don't need any half-baked expert to tell me it makes my clothes stink, it does not need any 'expert' to tell me it makes my eyes sting and water, it does not need an expert to tell me smells dreadful.
Selfish, ignorant drub addicts can smoke as much as they want as long as they do not affect other people.
Sadly considerate smokers, who do exist, are very much in the minority.

I do find smokers feel they are victimised, yet if they were more considerate(as my buddy states) then we probably be where we are today
