Damian Green said new laws bringing in a minimum price per unit of alcohol would prevent shops selling "very, cheap, very strong lager" that fuels drunken behaviour on the streets of Britain
.
The Government will today consult on a minimum price of 45p per unit despite warnings that the measures could squeeze the weekly supermarket bills of moderate, middle-class drinkers.
Speaking on BBC Radio Four, Mr Green said it is a "fact of economics and life that if you put the price up, demand for it goes down".
"What we're trying to stop specifically is very cheap, very strong alcohol because that's what contributes most to the terrible scenes we see in too many of our cities on a Friday and Saturday night of hugely drunk people, many of whom preloaded - in that wonderful phrase - before they go out for an evening's drinking," he said.
"The reason for doing minimum unit pricing and not just increasing taxes is precisely to hit those irresponsible offers of very cheap, very strong lager - it can't be right that you can buy a can of lager for 20p when a bottle of water will cost ten times that much."

totally wrong in my view keith, if he proposed stopping the cheap sale of super strength lagers and ciders people would support the idea, this is aimed at responsible people that like a drink with their evening meal or watching the t.v.

Far from being the nanny state it's about time that something was done about this scourge. It's working with tobacco (banning cigarettes is the workplace, pubs etc.). which has had an overall beneficial effect on the nation's health and pub culture leading to the opening of many more pubs in towns and villages up and down the country.
I'd like to go further, however, with a tax on salt, fat and oils including butter and biscuits and other extremely unhealthy produce which manufacturers loosely describe as food. A salt tax would be a major improvement.
At a stroke fast food outlets should be taxed immediately with a massive hike in taxes to help our dear children who know not of the horrors of blocked arteries.
All in ll a good thing which is a good start before, hopefully, the government raise the minimum unit price of alcohol to a more realistic £2 per unit.

for the vast majority it is not their downfall so why should they be punished for the weaknesses of others?

Exactly Howard and I doubt it will have much effect on the hardened drinker or some of the young who seem to think getting drunk is what having a drink is all about.

I am a drinker but I know that one drink can lead one onto the road to ruin. Look how dangerous smoking is. One of those sticks can lead to utter misery, a life of crime and a really bad cough. The smell of alcohol on people's breath or clothes is awful in fact I have to have a complete change of clothes after a few pints in the pub. Hopefully a restriction on the amount of alcohol one can buy in a pub will enforced with say three pints of strong beer or lager being the upper limit.
