The developments proposed at present are far from desecration !!
Probably no more than what would happen with 50 years more neglect ??
Been nice knowing you :)

Whilst we await the planning application which will apparently be in the next month or so, I am intrigued to know the views from the "anti-CGI camp" on the proposed War Memorial and it's associated infrastucture ??

I've sought some local views, Paul, and they're all contrary to any development on Western Heights apart from maintaining the present status.

In that case Alexander I will get my coat and go do something else - the status quo is a declining situation and I certainly don't want that !!

The meaning of present status, Paul, doesn't necessarily mean status quo.
It means maintaining Western Heights according to its present various heritage statuses (considering there are various organisations involved).
This does not exclude the idea of repair and maintenance works on the existing facilities.

But it's old question Alexander, that has been raised many times on this thread - who is going to pay for the repairs and ongoing maintenance - where is the money going to come from, if not the development ?
If we had some philanthropic millionaires, it would help, but we don't.

Of-course this brings us back to base 1, Roger: who will pay for repairs?
The first thing to do would be to present an estimation of how much these would cost, how long they would take, and a relevant list as to which repairs need carrying out.
Once we see this estimation, it is easier to make an opinion. In particular, any donor would want to see such a list of figures.

Round and round we go !!
We have already given a ballpark of many £millions over many year to stop the deterioration, and much more to get them back up to a 'Dover Castle' standard.
No-one or no-body, be it a donor or a grant fund will give millions away with out there being a reasonable amount of match funding which in itself will be millions. Where does the match funding come through is what everyone is saying
Anyway, I don't want to go through all this yet again....
As I have asked, I am interested to know peoples (we know your view on the memorial Alexander!) in particular Lorraine and Lara, what are their views on the Memorial igniroring any CGI plans?
Been nice knowing you :)

I was only trying to be practical, Paul.
But my view on the proposed war memorial is that it would add expense to expense, ie investing millions in a new project even though there are existing facilities that need millions to be repaired.
Spend to accumulate.

Bern, that means erecting a war memorial where entry is for payment.
Howard had said that it wouldn't be for payment.

i don't know of anyone against the proposed war memorial though i have doubts whether it will happen as english heritage seem to blow hot and cold on the project.
certainly would be prestigious to dover and would also be an added attraction for day trippers to visit.
#415 no it doesn't, necessarily. An attraction means footfall which can mean more spending.

If only we could hope that Roger came back from Hastings with news that DDC are going to serve a Section 215 notice on English Heritage to do the necessary works on their bit

Alexander - why have you got it into your head that people will pay to go to the memorial when you have been told they won't several times !!!
People coming to a memorial will likely pay for souvenirs, give donations, use a shop/cafe. If the Drop Redoubt or other fortifications are open people would pay for access which will pay for the upkeep.
Enhancing the visitor attractions (and shops like DTIZ) in Dover will keep people from moving out of the area to spend their money and encourage more to the area to spend their money. Simple economics

Careful Bern everyone has tried to explain the benefits of visitor numbers, without success.
Politics, it seems to me, for years, or all too long, has been concerned with right or left instead of right or wrong.
