Now there`s a real classic looking ship. Lovely picture Ed. Do they still build them like that or are they all built box like today? I must admit though, if something like PaubB`s liner above came through the harbour entrance 40 years ago, it would have been a spectacular sight, with the smaller ferries still operating.

She was built in 1955 at Swan Hunters of Newcastle. Originally built as a cargo ship for Port Line and named Port Sydney. Converted to passenger ship in 1972 and named Akrotiri Express.
1974 renamed Daphne until 1996.
1996 renamed Switzerland until 2002.
2002 renamed Ocean Odyssey
2002 renamed Ocean Monarch until 2007
2007 renamed Princess Daphne up to present.
520 Passengers, 250 Crew.
2 Doxford-Wallsend diesel engines giving 17 knots
At 55 years of age a tribute to British shipbuilding of years gone by.

Must be expensive to cruise on her I'd have thought - you get economies of scale with larger ships and most crew have a gift for making you feel important to them and are still able to keep it personal.

The Norwegian Sun in today..there seems to be a new trend towards the viguorously painted hull...this is the latest one. It may be an Italian designer trend. The Braemer is also in today but alas its rather dull beside this glamourous one

Glamorous? Gaudy, more like.

Much prefer the classic line of the Princess Daphne.
Don't know about gaudy but it's a shame that the placing of the windows in the 'sun' on the side of the Norwegian Sun make it look rather like an emoticon for 'hot and bothered'!

Too much like grafitti to me. Still, it adds some colour to an otherwise drab scene. May look better with the new cruise liner berth.

I'm sure that there are only two ships in the world which are powered by Doxford-Wallsend engines, the Princess Dahpne being one of them. Strange piston arrangement on the engines.

Don`t forget the other well known diesel engine`s Barry, who I`m sure Sid has shares in.

I was down at the cruise terminal today, taking some Discover Dover leaflets (I also dropped some off at the Marina office).
The NCL ships aren't particularly gaudy inside though; the Jewel is very good, the restaurant is wonderful and the theatre was the best I'd seen on a cruise ship.
The Sun is to replace the Jewel for this year.

Very big beauty in this morning. The picture taken about half an hour ago. Ive been onboard this one to take a couple of pix a few years back and its b-i-g, with long long corridors but of course all beautifully sumptious.
whoops forgot to add...its the MSC Poesia.

Hope the passengers who are coming into Dover, will be given the Discover Dover Leaflets; could help lots of businesses.

What I did find Interesting was the comment from DHB that they do have a welcoming committee for cruise liners when they come in, made up of many diffrent background people.
were others aware of this?

Lovely picture again PaulB, and I spotted it on my way down Jubilee Way. Thought you may have it, so got a different angle.
