We did it. Three nights and three days in a wartime shelter environment and we all came out intact, tired, cranky and in need of a bath, but cheerfuly glad to have promoted the town in our own small way. Alan and Stewart did very well and can now snore away in their own beds (well done them). A longer report when I feel more human again (could take awhile).
Politics, it seems to me, for years, or all too long, has been concerned with right or left instead of right or wrong.

Most definitely well done, let's hope it will pave the way for Dover to be awarded the George Cross.
Good Luck

The George Cross for Dover Campaign
83 St. David's Avenue, Aycliffe, Dover, Kent
Press Release
Over the Easter weekend three committee members, Alan Taylor, Stewart Dimmock and Chairman Cllr. Chris Precious, moved into The Grand Shaft in Dover, spending three nights and three days under conditions as close to wartime as possible. Sleeping on pallets in the tunnel once used as a wartime shelter from the bombing and shelling of the town they spent the days eating Spam and talking to the many visitors. A small exhibition of memorabilia, wartime posters and photographs of Dover during the conflict was on site and will be present at other events in the town over the coming year.
The whole effort was designed to raise awareness of the campaign as well as much needed funds to further promote the fight for the award and to see established a permanent memorial garden for the civilians who lost their lives to enemy action.
The campaign would like to thank DDC property services, The Western Heights Preservation Society, Crabble Corn Mill, PMS, Somerfields, Aldi, Farm Foods and Jewson's for their help and support. Extra mention goes to Terry Nunn for providing exhibits and organising wartime music and radio broadcasts and the London Road Community Forum for the marquee as well as all those individuals and groups who lent exhibits and did so much to make the weekend a success.
Thanks also go to all the visitors, from across the world, who made the whole weekend so worthwhile.

The coverage in the newspapers on this Event was quite mixed or quite different. The Mercury gave it some good space and showed a picture and so on. But the Dover EXpress on the other hand gave it next to no coverage at all. An inch of space in a side column.
This must be very disappointing for the lads. We ourselves here on Doverforum gave it good editorial coverage, Im sure most would agree ( its now in All Recent Features )...and of course this topical thread ran in tandem.
But despite the noble efforts of the three lads and their supporters and despite the noble cause...no coverage to speak of in the Dover Express.
Quite unbelievable, especially as there was good publicity on so many other forums including the tv and teletext. This was a blinking good effort for a blooming good cause for Dover - the clue is in the title. Express maybe or maybe not, Dover, I have nothing to say.

We put the story as the main Kent story on the website and on the south Kent and Dover page. The reason why space was limited in the paper was because the Easter holidays saw changes in our deadlines and we only had a smallamount of space left on the Tuesday morning.

Great stuff and well done to all for braving those chilly tunnels, even in full uniform and greatcoat it's still very cool and damp.
Must be all the tea and bread pudding - sorry I missed you all, was having a taster of Salsa dancing and of course performing at Blakes.
Will ther be a next time? if not see you at Hellfire Corner.
Oh Boy!, That'll be the day.........

kathy, its reasureing that you put the story on line, but not everybody has accses to a pc,much better to run a hard copy as in the dover express might have got more brownie points if you did.

I can see Kathy's point of view what with Easter deadlines and all that. But then it's not totally down the "lady on the spot", the final decision is made not in Dover but in Folkestone.
In a few days time things will get worse, coffee in the corner anyone?

It is hard to make the decision as to what goes on line and what goes as hard copy. Generally I do make the final decision and I basically just had to do the best I could for everyone that had news to go in.
Terry, you're more than welcome to share our conversation. The more people who know where to find us the less chance there is of me nursing coffee and doing the Sun crossword on my own!!
By the way, I have had all my hair cut off so you may have to look twice to recognise me!!

Hopefully once a week plus we will be at the usual meetings and I like coming to events in the summer in the old Simpson van. I'm sure the chaps will turn up to plenty of things as well. It is sad but we have to just make sure we are around as much as possible. We will still be coming out to talk to people for stories etc

Clearly Kathy the big story here is that you have had all your hair cut off
...so without further ado can you send me a picture for instant publication.
It will help people recognise you in future.
The next hot news of course is the Dover Express departure. I take it that its happening right now. Sad that the once great Dover can now no longer support a paper of either hue. Very sad. I take it too that its all to be run from Folkestone.
I wonder what Folkestone's got that we havent got, everything seems to be moving there.

In case you haven't twigged by now the Dover Express office has closed. Staff are now at Folkestone.
However, one day a week they will set up shop at Dickens Corner with laptop and coffee to hand. Sad, but that's life these days.
