  Thought this one might be of interest, forgot all about it earlier, but to co-incide with Olympic events this vessel seems to always show up around those times. I didnt get its name unfortunately and as you can see the Royal Navy slate grey camouflage works to perfection.

  Nausicaa is a great example, Paul. A year-round attraction that keeps people going to Boulogne despite the fact that it has lost its own ferry link. The port does a great job in attracting the cruise lines, but the town needs to do more to show these people that we actually welcome them and their money. For example, next year Carnival Cruise Line will be operating a series of cruises from Dover on the Carnival Liberty. The clientele will be predmoninantly American, so there is an opportunity for the Town to start thinking about what they could do to welcome this influx of Americans, who will not doubt be looking to spend their money. As Boulogne has shown, you have to speculate to accumulate! Liverpool has joined the hunt for cruise business, and the new Enderby Wharf cruise terminal in Greenwich will be a major draw being so close to London. A strategy needs to be formulated now for Dover to truly capitalise on this trade.

  The warship above is one of the three River class Offshore Patrol Vessels. HMS Severn of this class has called at Dover several times. I took some photos of her berthed on the Eastern Arm with an arrested French trawler some time ago and the commanding officer, Lieut.Commander Marcus Hember, sent me an email asking if they could use one of the photos for the RN website.

  You may have noticed Ed that curiously HMS Severn bears an IMO number and Port of Registry (Portsmouth). You'll be very familiar with this - but for those who aren't, the International Maritime Organization number is a unique seven-digit identifier that is assigned to propelled, sea-going merchant ships of 100 gross tons and above. It serves to identify ships and is not changed when the ship's owner, country of registry or name changes.
  
  Warships normally fall into one of the groups of ships that are exempt from registration.
  
  When I last looked it seemed Severn was built as commercial venture by Vosper Thorneycroft and is chartered to the Royal Navy, hence her merchant ship status. I don't know what the position is with her sister-ships Mersey and Tyne.

  Great stuff there guys as ever, you can certainly learn an awful lot on this forum
  
  The Braemar as we all know was significantly delayed yesterday on its inbound journey to Dover. Apparantly this was due to an unforeseen technical problem with a lock gate at the eastern entrance of the Kiel Canal. With speed restrictions in place within the canal and the River Elbe's currents also not in their favour they couldn't make up the delay en route.
  
  Of course this meant that over 900 passengers had an unexpected long afternoon to spend in Dover. Extra shuttle bus services were laid on to take passengers into town. As Kevin says above we really do need to speculate to accumulate least of all for occassions such as these.
  
  Yes, Boulogne is certainly on the pulse and with their spectacular Nausicaa everyone just loves it. The loss of the direct ferry there must have been a bad blow for them but it was still heaving when we were there recently, certainly worth the drive from Calais although I do wish we could still get there direct from Dover.

  What you are saying about Dover Kevin, is very true, but who is going to do it ?
  The Town Team should be the obvious body, but seem incapable and because they refuse to appoint a market-manager and want to do it all themselves, are ensuring that this market will be a failure too.
  
  I have given up trying to help move Dover forward; no one (Town Council, Town Team and WCCTA) is listening or taking any notice.
  The Paper on how to bring a successful street-market here was discarded, the Tourism Strategy (now updated) and the Plan of Action for Dover Town are just being ignored by the above bodies
  
  I have tried for many years to help move Dover forward with many initiatives: Dover Loyalty Scheme; Discover Dover leaflets; Business Support etc.
  
  No one I have sent the above papers to, have said they are rubbish, so I can only assume that because I am Persona Non-Grata, nothing I say will make any difference. Time to bow out.

  i came across one of the town team in market square the other day, a distant look on his face, dishevelled appearance, trainers falling apart etc.
  
  decency forbids me naming him but he asked me for 50 p to buy a cup of tea, i replied "how do i know you won't spend it all on drink david"?

  They don't have to remain potless for ever Howard. I have suggested that they write a proper Business Plan (afterall they are all businessmen and women on the Town Team - apart from one) and then go to see the major stakeholders in Town: DTC, DDC, DHB an perhaps Menon and Seelan, owners of the Ramada and Dover Marina Hotel and Spa - they have invested millions in Dover and I'm sure would want some return on that investment, like raising Dover up and moving it forward.
  
  I put this forward and they don't want to do that, instead they are going to invite people to a meeting where they will present to them a consultation paper.
  
  As every businessman or woman knows, Banks or other lenders or givers of money, respond so much more positively to a well-written Busines-Plan than anything else.
  
  £7,500 from each of the above - and there may well be more bodies and buisinesses who would be interested, would be more than enough to pay a salary and salary-related costs and as businesses join up to the Town-Team, their money will come in too.
  
  It's all in my Plan of Action for Dover Town Howard and how to move Dover forward on the Tourism front, is in my Tourism Strategy - but that's being ignored too; not even discussed, just ignored.
  That's why I'm not banging my head on the proverbial brick-wall anymore. It's like they are cutting off their nose to spite their face; the trouble is that the face they are spoiling, is Dover's.

  Life goes on in the harbour apace. The fab Wind Surf has just arrived just after 2 o' clock.
  
  Here she is..this is her second visit, she now nestles comfortably at the terminal for anyone who wants to see her.   Windsurf caught everyone by surprise by arriving a day early, which caused a few problems in arranging the staffing at the terminal. Still, it was nice to see her arriving across the bay in daylight for a change.
  
  All being well she's sailing at 16:00 hrs. tomorrow.

  The Black Watch will be here on Sunday TR.
  
  To start the week on Monday 3rd September we will see the Saga Ruby TR, and for the first time this season we will have the Costa Pacifica grace our shores with a PoC
  
  On Tuesday we have two more, the Sapphire TR, and the Artania PoC which we last saw in May.
  
  Two more on Wedsnesday 5th September the AIDAMar PoC and the beautiful Crystal Symphony TR.
  
  On Thursday, another two ships, the Grand Mistral PoC, also last seen here in May and the Seven Seas Voyager TR, last here in June.
  
  On Friday 7th September, we have one ship, the faithful Braemar TR
  
  Nothing on Saturday but to end the week on Sunday 9th September we have the return of the Black Watch TR.
  
  A very packed week indeed

  The Wind Surf certainly makes a spectacular sight in the port. September is traditionally one of the busiest months as the cruise ships start to re-position to warmer climes. It's one of the first signs that summer (what we've had of it this year!) is coming to an end.
  
  Correction to my earlier post, Carnival Legend will be operating a series of nine cruises from Dover next year, not Carnival Liberty. Either way, Carnival is the biggest name in cruising so it's important that Dover puts on a good show.

  as it happens looked out of my front room window last night [2235],the wind surf was framed between a lampost [street] and a niegbours house [oh for a camara] all lit up.a magnifasent sight.

  Brian you are right with the lights across the channel twinkling away, and the ship lit up the moon shinning on the sea, it was a light spectacular all of its own.

  Yes quite a light show last night, I got some pictures of the hugely bright full moon which I havent uploaded yet. The ship was ablaze with light..all decks lit and lights strung between the four masts. They must have been having a bit of a party...fandangoing the night away in some style. Pity I wasnt asked as i can jitterbug with the best of them.. cough ! ( okay I'm fibbing ! )
