Ye Gods. An amnesty for those sub letting their subsidised flats in Grenfell House now!
So just how many in an average London tower block are actually legit?

#89: I do wonder if the local councils that have dislodged so many people from their homes whilst they carry out fire safety repairs, Will be doing checks on their right to be in them before that let them back in.

For many reasons it is important to get as accurate a figure as possible of the number of people in the building at the time of the fire and to establish the number that died. The authorities need to use all sensible means to achieve this and this should not be an excuse for political point scoring or low brow jibes.
The wider enquiry needs to examine the effectiveness of the TMO, the relationship with the local authority, the management of the refurbishment contract by both and the main contractor, the role played by all 3 in agreeing variations to the contract to reduce costs, the way fire certification of the cladding was obtained etc etc
None of this should be political

£80 million donated.
200 tons of clothes(now being distributed to Red Cross outlets throughout country for sale to add to above amount).
Amnesty for illegals and those sub-letting council flats.
Any one remember how much was raised by us all having a bee tattoo for Manchester? Anyone remember Manchester?

I doubt anyone will ever forget Manchester and that awful loss of 22 lives.
Donations from over 450,000 people during the One Love Manchester concert on Sunday 4 June raised an additional £2.7m, bringing the latest total to £10.2m.

I doubt people will ever forget London's far bigger tragedy with it's much larger loss of life 80? and all those families made homeless with absolutely nothing left.

Here we go again with the Guardian. 'Labour condemns large number of empty homes in Kensington and Chelsea after Guardian revealed there were 1,652 vacant properties' :-
https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2017/aug/02/revelations-about-empty-homes-in-grenfell-area-simply-unacceptable
In actual fact the UK has one of the lowest rates of empty homes in the developed world: about a third as many as France, Germany, or Italy.
Under this 'wicked Tory Government' the number of properties kept vacant for over six months in London has fallen by 58% since 2010. It's now just 0.6% of all London homes.
(N.B. a large number of these 'empty' homes will be like my mother's home, which was empty after her death whilst awaiting probate)

I think in this case there is a difference between "empty" and "empty".
Empty I associate with no furnishings or no owner or as in the Captain's example awaiting probate.
There are also those properties that are "empty" because there is seldom anyone living there, such as second or holiday homes. These are the ones that can cause so much resentment when local people need housing be they in London or the countryside.

A spokesman for the fire brigade said he could not comment.

Oh dear. This goes against the narrative of the 'justifiable anger' felt by many?

This was brought up soon after the disaster that the Fire and Rescue service were happy with the cladding and also their advice on the night for everyone to stay in their flats was ignored by those that survived. This does not detract from the heroics of the fire persons on the night but reflects on their leaders.

Public enquiry now open with the vast majority of survivors in temporary accommodation, the problem being there was no vacant flats and houses locally before the fire and many people do not want to move very far.
