14:2682815I think Alan has a point Howard when bus routes are not gritted, he is harsh about the council workers though.
Why bother to grit the main shopping areas when so many people can't get to the shops because they must use the ungritted hills that surround Dover to get to those shops.

14:2982816Alan - the fact is that if you get heavy snow for months on end every year, as in much of Russia, Scandinavia etc. then it is important and cost effective to spend a lot of money on snow clearing facilities, a snowplough on every corner kind of thing.
Here in the UK such heavy snowfalls as we have now are infrequent and usually or short duration therefore it is not cost effective to outlay and tie up the kind of capital needed.
It is a matter of getting a balance.

14:3282817This is cut and pasted from the Stagecoach website. Quite remarkable really considering the eproblems.
"Dover
Route 13 is now running but not via Woodnesbourgh.
Route 14 is running but not via Bettshanger.
A town service remains as a loop, then via Dock road and Jubilee Way to Whitfield / Tesco. Aycliffe is being served as far as Western Docks (Mega Factory).
Route 15 is running as far as Buckland Bridge, then turning back into town operating via Dock Rd, Jubilee Way and A2.
Route 60 - now running between: Pencester Rd- Coombe Valley Hospital RoB - Buckland Bridge - Town Centre - Jubilee Way - Tesco.
Route 61 - now running between: Mega roundabout - Town Centre - Buckland Bridge - Town Centre - Jubilee Way - Tesco.
Route 62 - now running a Town Centre Loop but not via Linces and the "Ways".
Route 63 - now running a Folkestone Road - Elms Vale Junction - Elms Vale Road and return.
Route 15 to Canterbury is running from Pencester Road - Jubilee Way A2- then on to Canterbury Only.
Route 15 to Deal is currently suspended due to drifting snow.
Route 82 is currently suspended.
Route 87 is running except via main road not Whitfield.
Route 88 is running using 87 route. No service to Eythorne, Elvington, Sheperdswell or Coldred.
Route 89 is running same route as route 15.
ALL National Express services cancelled until 12:00. "
Early problems of course stem from the fact that the depot is no longer in the town.
And for once I agree with Barry W.

16:2782837I have just had two e-mails from the Council saying that my Green Waste and re-cycling will be collected tomorrow. Please leave it out by 7 a.m.
I cannot get out of my drive up here in Bewsbury Cross Lane, Whitfield, there must be two feet of snow where it has drifted.
Mr. Watkins, are these E-mails sent out automatically regardless of the weather.?
I seem to remember in February when we had the last lot of snow the vehicles couldn't get around as the drivers were on snow duty and the re-cycling was picked up on the next collection date.
I don't want to struggle to put it out and then have to bring it back in.

16:4782839Alec, I don't know.
Would have thought you are correct in your assumption.
Don't see how they can know at this stage the state og the side roads.

The emails are automatic and sent out the day before the collection to those who signed up for such notifications. We are looking at a feature that would allow staff to send a message to all those on a particular round/day.
However as Paul says the Contractor will not always know what the issues are until they try.

17:4082846Here's the KCC Highways update at 16.00.
I've left off the bits that are not Dover (District)
Dover:
Snow Emergency in place
Roads - Action as per WDO instructions.
Pavements - Hand salting gangs have spent the day clearing snow from footways and precincts of Dover, Deal, + around shops of Sandwich, Walmer, Wingham, Eastry,Whitfield, River and Aylesham
Saltbins - Saltbin filling has mainly been in Dover(Maxton and Clarendon wards) , River, Temple Ewell,
Other Local Action - Spot salting & ploughing on main bus routes as resources have permitted around urban Dover ( St Radigunds, Melbourne Ave, The Linces, Friars/Squires Way)
Farmers ploughing in all areas, all day
Dover District Council resources assisting in Dover and Deal precincts
Road Closures - None known on Primary / Secondary routes.
You can't say they aren't trying.

19:3782880People go on about bus routes being gritted; well they cannot even grit and clear the roads through the Industrial Estate to where the bus garage is.
Yes you may see the odd bus run round with just a driver and one member of staff that can be because they are checking a route for safety prior to taking passengers.
One thing that made my blood boil today was the number of teenagers who think its fun to throw snowballs at bus windscreens, it is hard enough for the drivers to keep their wits about them in these conditions, it just makes me think these people have no brain cells.

20:0482891Recently in Doncaster the bus company had trouble with yobs throwing stones at buses on one particular route. So they sent out a 'special' with 12 coppers crouching on the floor between the passengers. When the bus came under fire the driver stopped and opened the door. The yobs didn't know what had hit them. Perhaps we need to try some of the same.
