The camera is, as far as I know, still there somewhere and so is local awareness. The morons who do this won't take any notice of a local Councillor going into a school - they're probably playing truant anyway.
You're right though, the problem won't fix itself.

DDC should offer £1000 reward for information leading to arrest and conviction of the guilty parties. It must cost them at least that much every time it's repaired.

I support Peter`s reward idea, like terrorists we must not give in to vandalism.
In our Parishes playground equipment is vandalised, are we to let children suffer due to the actions
of the mindless few?CCTV is helping and the vandals are being dealt with.
Some children of dysfunctional families will always be a problem,we must persevere and tackle the problem.
Folkestone Road needs all the character / heritage still in place,if we do not persevere we will all be the losers

It's often said that one definition of stupidity is doing the same thing over again and expecting a different outcome. Surely constantly repairing the shelter without taking steps to guard it against vandalism is a good example?

Was it the only shelter of its kind when the trams were running? If not, an alternative might be to relocate it to another (safer) site in the town which is historically accurate? Putting it in the Transport Museum would be a nonsense unless that museum were to be moved to a more sensible location.

Adding to Keith's list...........
How long was it there or is it still there?
Was it ever working?
Was the picture quality good enough to identify a vandal without any doubts being raised?

Sigh...
I would like to say that DTC has a track record of 'squaring the circle', and finding innovative solutions to the most intractable of problems.
And if the seafront toilets/retail outlet were up and running, I would say just that.
But surely these two issues have a great deal in common? Had the toilets been left to 'fend for themselves' - as the shelter has, there would have been much the same outcome. But no, a solution has been 'found'. The toilets have been given an additional function, a constant and positive utility...
...and so should the shelter.

many suggestions have been made about the future of the tram shelter, tom insists that a bench would curb bad behaviour. having re-assessed the situation this morning perhaps a sprinkling of bar stools would be more appropriate?.

the idea is catching on as the nearest bus shelter shows, maybe time for the licensing authorities to consider making our shelters dual purpose?

I know that in America, some parts certainly, you can get cash for your empty aluminium cans. Homeless people are often portrayed with shopping carts full of such cans on TV.
Come to think of it I haven't seen out local 'knights of the road' trawling the streets for car batteries and the like lately, they too performed a worthwhile job.
So, maybe your local tow-path-tipplers would not do this, but some enterprising folk might. I know one lady in the States that collects cans to give the resultant cash to her favourite charity.
