Kath, you are such a tease. Please print the rest of the letter in #86. I am dying to know whether it came from the pen of a Mr. Williams.

Tom - It came from the pen of someone called "A WEARY HOUSEHUNTER" - NOT WILLIAMS !!

So little changes over the years. Much of the initial argument is brushed aside. What is at first spoken of in the response as "a fair return" soon becomes "not pay the interest on a third of what it costs to build".
This is why the high streets of today are left in a dismal state. There is money for some in idleness. WH was right it should NOT be cost effective to leave properties un-let. Fortunately Dover has it's cap out for 'Government' money to help these poor landlords in their eternal-hour of need.

Phil - you asked about photo of the installation of the Lord Warden at the Bredenstone - Earl Beauchamp -
is this the picture you meant?
Earl Beauchamp was appointed Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports in 1913 but the installation, at the ancient Bredenstone, on the Western Heights, did not take place until the following year. This picture was taken during the military procession up Military Hill, the carriage of the Earl and Countess Beauchamp following close behind the Band of the 3rd Hussars, who made a fine spectacle for local people lining the route up the steep hill, an escort of soldiers in the Royal East Kent Yeomanry acting as the rear guard. A second photograph published in the Dover Express at the time provided a close-up of Lord Beauchamp's open carriage and the Yeomanry. (Scan of an original sepia photograph believed taken by the Dover Express and published in the newspaper on 24th July 1914.) The carriage is opposite two boys walking up hill, towards the right.

Yes indeed Kath - that's the one. There were three pictures, one walking up Military Hill, one with the Royal Sussex Rgt at the Bredenstone with railings in front, and another inside the ceremonial tent.
There are only two or three pre-WW2 photos of the Redoubt in use that we know of, and the Express pics would almost double that number!
Thanks!
(PS there's no picture Kath). :(

Kath - I'll buy you a pint, or a sherry, when I see you! I'll drop you my e-mail address via FB.
Great photo - so good to see it clear. That's now the car park at the top of Military Hill if anyone is wondering.

It's particularly these three that I'd like to get hold of Kath. All are taken in the Redoubt, but as you can see, my copies are so poor they are unusable which is a pity. All are from the same issue as the lovely picture you kindly scanned above.
Thank you so much!
