Why has this area been secured from people?
The area around the Market Square region is very sad, between the Kebab Shop and the Estate Agents............there was a seat there...where has that gone...have a look as you pass....the rotten empty shops opposite etc.. .Most unsightly.............
Why has this area been cordoned off?.....it would give access to the town for the elderly people etc....who live in the Flats on York Street etc.....should be open anyway......also, the back of the Roman Painted House as you see it...looks very rough.....
Again, may I draw your attention to the Community Garden by the River near Kingfisher House/Age Concern..................very sad...... lots of people pass by, and that is very close to the Dover Town Council...............

The area is currently secured with a high quality chain link fence and gate, presumably to prevent it being used as an extension of the area behind the kebab shop favoured by the day drinkers.
Obviously when the community garden project goes ahead it will be opened up and accessible to all.
The RPH is a big problem though the unsightl back wall could be screened with shrubs or covered with a living wall

The Roman Painted House had painted murals (Figures) on it....I should think this looked good in the past.....and feel it could be redone and restored..in keeping with its History......
I am all for the History of Dover....for me the White Cliffs Experience should have been worked at, and enlarged. We have more History than Bath, but Bath did not have a Port

and could sustain their History...made it desireable.......we have bowed too much to the Port...
This is the centre of Town....most certainly the "drinkers" can be moved on...many people used to sit on this and other seats, like any other town....
Why so nervous about the drinkers....? they do not rule.............

This land is owned by DDC and used by the Musuem for educational purposes.
And that, of course, can continue.

Indeed the important word in all this is COMMUNITY

Charlie - we do indeed have more diverse history than almost any coastal or inland Town or City, but it has continually failed to be promoted and marketed properly.
The Port could have been an aide to Dover but it has proved to be the opposite, not just through lack of investment, because Dover is (currently) a "to-it-and-through-it" Town, rather than a destination and so although we do get visitors here, places like Crabble Corn Mill, Roman Painted House and the Transport Museum - all run by volunteers, don't get a look in - ask them all about their visitor numbers.
There needs to be some one "managing" the Town, someone who has a cunning plan or two (or more), but a little smarter than Baldrick.
Someone who can pro-actively support businesses here, as well as creating/inceasing membership for the appropriate organisation - the more members, the bigger the voice and the more income for the projects and initiatives to have a good chance of coming to fruition.
I have tried for many years to do all this bit without any support and I accept I may not be over-qualified with degrees etc. I do know what the Town and the businesses want and need, but accept it will never be me (again).
The question for the Town and District Councils, DHB and the Chamber of Commerce is, who (the person) and what (the organisation) is going to do it ? - and the big answer is................ no one, because none of the above care enough.

it seems bonkers to me that you can't do the job which I think you are more than qualified for. I believe you would do much to bring about a revival in Dover's fortunes. Perhaps we should have a petition to get you into post!

I have lived in Dover since 1987 and in all of that time this plot of land has been a shamefully wasted asset, as has been pointed out on previous occasions.
'Twas always thus. I worked for six months at the White Cliffs Experience in the year 2000 whilst it was running down prior to closure. Shortly after that I put a very long rambling post on Dover Forum about the workings of the WCE which was reproduced earlier this year on the thread below:
http://www.doverforum.com/letters/viewtopic.php?id=6257
The ninth paragraph before the end states:
"A further resource that was never utilised was the field extending from the WCE to the Roman Painted House, and from York Street to the row of buildings on the Market Square. In one corner are the exposed remains of the great Norman church of St.Martin-le-Grand and underneath the grass lie Roman remains. In all my time in Dover I have never seen this area open to the public except on the rarest of occasions. This great expanse of greensward in the centre of downtown Dover sits locked away behind high fences all year round. No attempt was made by the WCE to capitalise on this priceless asset. There could have been fetes, markets and boot fairs; bouncy castles and slides for weary mothers to occupy their progeny, with an all-day crèche in the Gromet's glazed crescent overlooking it; tables, chairs and flowerbeds to make it into a mini park opening off the Market Square; there was even an existing kiosk to serve refreshments from. All constituting additional revenue and additional potential customers for the WCE."
