keith and chris
you make statements that do not hold too much water.
reporting incidents to the police are only after the event and most likely when people are not around either.
only regular patrols by police/wardens are likely to have any effect on the vandals that wreck our environment.

HOWARD;
For this i agree, and thats why like on other issues(tram shelter) there shoud be cctv and regular patrols(we now have the latter)
so much more could be done, but some agencies sit back and hope the problem will go away and of course it wont
i washappy to go into schools talking to children on the damage
but when the council refused the cctv i thought sod it why should i bother
so thats on a back burner now

Howard, my point is that, like so many agencies, the police do work on statistics therefore the number of reported incidents pushes up the figures to a point where something more will done. Not bothering to report just means that when somebody brings it up the response will be that, "no one has complained before". With resources stretched it is difficult to convince them that resources should be directed at a problem area if there is no record of it being a problem.
Politics, it seems to me, for years, or all too long, has been concerned with right or left instead of right or wrong.

in part you are correct, but i have proved to the community safety unit a case on the tram shelter, both of damage and cost, and had support of local agencies and the police.
but still the community safety unit says it would prefer to shell out £100 every time one pane of glass is broken than put in a cctv to prevent it
and we had a home owner happy to put camera in his house which is right next to the site.
no wonder people just give up
as i said i had a wider project going into schools etc
never mind hope councils are saving up there £100's

Yes, there are some bad buggers out there, chaps. People who spit in the streets, drop paper and cans, even trample on plants and break windows, heaven forfend. We are also taxed, have some ridiculously punitive parking laws, have to obtain planning permission to build on our own property, and the school system is pants. I personally know some guys in prison for something as trivial as breaking wind near a member of the royal family (I jest) banged up alongside some genuinely scary guys.
Yes, chaps, Life Can Be Unfair. I say we drop it all, give up now, roll over, let the bad guys trash Dover, take our money to spend on fags and booze and possibly even loose women, and (pulls up skirt in horror and emits a little shriek) not take care of our gardens.
No, guys - even if the gardens are abused and we look like eejits from time to time, the fact that we are doing it and will do it it good enough. All the challenges along the way are just that, challenges. And challenges are Gods way of saying "you need something more than the ironing to keep you busy". Challenges were created specifically for us to overcome. So we will.

Excellent post but I must take you to task over your loose women comments...a fine body of women.

who in the past have been my sole source of comfort when worrying about the world ills. Maybe if there was more love in the world there'd be less hatred around.

Well - who would have thought such a positive idea aimed at bringing the community together could stir up such a vipers nest of views and comments?
As someone who was there and has also done lots of research around how to make volunteer community bodies work and fund them etc. I would make the following observations.
a) this will be a formally constituted community organisation
b) it will be independent of both councils but will and has welcomed the involvement of councillors
c) there have been extensive discussions with DDC regarding leasing the land and these I believe are well advanced
d) whatever the final shape of the arrangements it will need to accommodate the use of the site by the other community organisations that currently use it periodically
e) the whole point is that this will be something built by the community for the community and will be maintained by the community
Brian whilst I will defend your right to say what you want I think your sort of defeatist mentality and words is exactly what has allowed the "day drinkers", junkies and other assorted n'er-do-wells to take over not only our town centre and open space but many others in Britain.
It is about time the decent, honourable, hard working, law abiding citizens of Dover reclaimed their town from these people - because frankly enough is enough

I am at a loss why anybody would not support this venture. The mind boggles in despair sometimes..
