15:4381455Jan - Political parties (Conservatives certainly) do not dictate to local councillors 'from London'. It does not work that way. I can say that with absolute certainty as a former Constituency Chairman for the Conservatives and former councillor (12 years on DDC)

17:5281468I have always followed my concsience, never been told how to vote, but believe the people who vote for me have the right to know where I stand politically,I am proud of what my party has achieved(most of the time, few wobbles) but generally and the electorate have that right to know.I could stand as an independant and I would be lying to the people that have voted for me,of course I could pretend to be an Indy and get 2 lots of votes like some people.
If you knew what I know,we would both be in trouble!

19:1081481That is true but we are discussing Dover Branch Conservatives who never did put up Town Council candidates until Roger Frayne's Constituency chairmanship. There was always a spot of controversy over it for Dover Branch but my view held sway until Roger. Branches are not dictated to from the centre.

19:1481484OK, as the councillors act independently from their party headquarters what is the point of canvassing under the party banner. I believe you should stand as independents affilliated to your chosen party, eg Independent Conservative/Labour.

19:3381496Jan - local parties (I can only speak for the Conservatives here) choose their own candidates and agree their policies for the local election with no reference to the centre. They are nevertheless fully signed up Party supporters and the elections where candidates are chosen by the local Party are official Party candidates, not independent.
Political Parties are not monstrous centrally controlling conspiracies at all, but are made up by individual people, local people, who care about their community and the policies needed to improve them. They feed to the centre far, rather than the other way around.
The Party label binds that group of local candidates who share common values and have a particular outlook on life. It gives the voter a good idea as to those values.
I do find it very funny the misconceptions and misunderstanding people have about how the parties work.

19:5781498I am so pleased to have amused you Barry but do not really appreciate the put-down, no wonder you annoy people on this board.
At least Keith understands my point it is a shame you can not or will not.

21:2381512Put down Jan, what put down? I explained the situation and made no put-downs. Unless you refer to my general comment about the misconceptions people have of the Parties. Not specifically directed at anyone or a put down of any kind.
Perhaps you are being far too sensitive. If you want to read that as a 'put down' so be it, but it is not meant to be.
As for 'annoying people on this board' come off it. And if you think that one is a 'put-down' then you are right!

07:3781560Jan - it would be very boring if people were not annoyed. I am glad I annoyed you and there is no need to thank me.

17:2781657This is just to put the record straight and is not meant as a political comment at all.
I read in This Is Kent that Georgette lists Age Concern as an interest, a long time ago she worked at the shop for no more than a month before leaving at her own request, as far as I know she does not help at Riverside.
