Were is our council getting all this money from,Just had house painted Now we have been told we are to have a new service will be introduced across the district from September 2011 5 yes 5 new waste bins one for food one for paper a new wheelie Bin and so on these houses don't have space to swing a cat and we were never asked if we wanted this new service. So that means they will cut jobs because you only need two men to put these bins on the lorries instead of the 6 men we have now.And we will be doing the recycling for the council while they will be getting the money from it all. Spend some money on the town and stop wasting peoples time with your crack pot idiots working at the council. The Bins Are Food Bin And caddy, Recycling Bin, Recycling Box, Garden Waste, And Rubbish Bin.

alan
when you say 5 waste bins, are they actually bins or bags?
apparently in our area we are not getting wheelie bins.

Went to quite an interesting talk last year at the Dover Society when the recycling was talked about.
Overall with a joined up working (I think with Shepway with the option of taking on Thanet when their contract is up) the new service will make a saving towards all of the budget cuts that have been imposed on the councils, and better meet the reycling targets. To me it makes sense to have it all properly coordinated and recycles properly.
Can't understand why people moan when they are not working with other authorities and then knock them when they try and do something about !!!
I will moan though...... the binmen can collect our black bags from the top of our path (50ft along a flat pavement) but the same people refuse to pick up the recycling from the same place and we have to take it to the other end of the path

Been nice knowing you :)

Alan I think the notion here is that it will save money rather than cost money. As I understand it and I must admit Im not entirly up to speed on the in and outs of rubbish collection..but hasnt there been a goverment directive on smelly waste as they call it. They are committed to collecting that regularly where they can be less regular with the non smelly stuff. I think I remember david cameron talking about 'smelly waste' the other week.

Recycling Team Takes To The Streets
A new team will be out and about across Dover District and Shepway making sure residents know all there is to know about their new recycling and waste collections.
Rebecca Green, David Lane, Suzy Wood and Darren Roberts will be visiting homes to talk to people about the new service, and answer any questions they may have about the changes and recycling generally.
It is just one way that the councils are getting the message across. The communications campaign, funded by the Waste Resources Action Programme, includes four-page leaflets and service guides delivered to homes across the district, advertising and promotion through local newspapers, local radio and poster sites, and road shows.
The improved service will be rolled out in Shepway from early June and Dover District from September. It includes a weekly collection of all food waste, which will be sent for composting, and an improved recycling collection that will take plastic packaging like yogurt pots, ice cream tubs and food trays - not just plastic bottles.
Roger Walton, who leads environmental services for both councils, said: "The aim of the communications campaign is to show how the new collections work and how residents can recycle more, and to encourage residents to use the new services and help protect our environment."
Alternative collections methods will be used for homes that cannot have wheeled bins.
Been nice knowing you :)

paul refers to "smelly waste", about a year ago eric pickles promised that everyone would have a weekly collection to make sure there were no "take away curries" stinking the streets out.
he has now reneged on this.

Howard, there's to be a weekly food waste collection, how's that a U-turn on what he said?
I could say that all this is down to having to meet EU recycling targets but that would give Vic some ammo so I won't

not the report i read ray, it left it up to individual councils to decide when they collected.
besides what constitutes food waste, people do not rinse out their take away containers or pet food tins so things like that will go in something other than food waste bins.

If they make recycling to complicated some will not bother, all recyclables should be sorted at a central depot.
At the moment we have dustbin, blue bag, green bag and tins/bottles/plastics bin, that is quite enough thank you very much.
For those who might be interested I now donate all my tins to the Air Cadets who use the money raised. When I see the lady concerned I will ask if she would like more.

What are they going to do with the food waste, that they might collect, I for one will not be recyling any food waste,it's going back to the dark ages, when a man used to come round collecting pig swill.

The plan is to digest the food waste to prodcue methane gas to burn.
Some friends of mine take all their recycling to Hawkinge instead of leaving ot out to be collected, goo idea if you regulalrly go that way or can gang together with others and you get paid for it.

Had anyone been at the neigbourhood forum meeting last week , Roger Walton and Mandy Pile of DDC were there to explain it all.
Can not remember all that was said but i think Scotchie got it more or less accurate in his post.

I brought this up months ago,my main concerns were houses that open up on paths straight from the front door,eg Tower Hamlets Road/Street with no or little back garden and no side passage.Hills like Mount Road, and steps and my other concerns were disabled people and nappies.
Still the Council is says that 85- 90% of people will have these wheelie bins, and although I am not opposed to Wheelie bins my main concern is that Disabled people may not be able to cope with them and when I asked who would decide which disabled people would or wouldnt have wheelie bins I was told 'The Binnen will decide' and the Tories found that funny and then they said the Cllrs can decide.I am not qualified and neither are the binmen do work out a person's Disability.
On nappie I pushed on this as well and I had heard that they were going to charge for nappy collection, but this has now changed to put them in your wheelie bin and they will be picked up every 2 weeks!
These bins are large, and chipped as I understand it,and although free will cost you about £40 to replace or if you move into a new property. But on the bright side daily races are being held in Melbourne Avenue on them everyday, and on Saturday nights Wheelie Bins parties will be held around the Bar-b-que bins when they are set fire too.
If you knew what I know,we would both be in trouble!

This whole rubbish thing has got more complicated than rocket science. Jan T has mentioned the Neighbourhood Forums there and indeed Roger Walton himself was there on hand, circulating to each table to answer any questions asked. I found it difficult to ask the right questions because it is a topic way beyond baffling. Living in The Gateway we just put rubbish down the chute..end of! Although there is some good recycling of glass and so on.
But here is my tuppence worth on it...
The reason these new changes are coming into place is that there are directives from both EU and HMGovernment.
There has been a huge tax increase on the use of Land Fill Sites, this is a European Union initiative/directive. Across the EU we are running out of Land Flll Sites hence the new tax levels to discourage their use. The more you put in landfill the more you pay....and the amounts are enormous. This is essentially the problem. The tax burden has become huge for you and me and the government makes three.
So... some waste just has to go to landfill ...such as smelly waste, but if you can hive off much of the other stuff people discard and call it recycling then you dont pay because it wont reach the Land Fill Sites...and in fact there's a double whammy of benefit here, the recycled stuff can be re-used so in theory everybody wins. You pay less tax, the government pays less tax, as much of the stuff people discard wont reach landfill.
The problem lies in making it work at the grass roots level.
All the above is probably as clear as mud but....its one of those topics!
