Even if the Belgian ports together had the spare capacity to handle the vast volume of Dover/Calais traffic the extra mileage the truckers would incur added to the much higher ferry costs would mean we would be paying vastly higher prices for essentials in the shops. Besides truckers need to know the quickest way to get a crossing, in normal times it is always Calais unless Dunkirk is better for geographical reasons, any change would mean them taking pot luck on which Belgian port had the next sailing.

Guys there is no realistic way any immediate continental port can compete with Calais or indeed will be able to compete with Calais. If you look at Post 1432 on the Sea News pages from as far back as march, you will see a designer layout of the shape of things to come at the Port of Calais... all very impressive stuff indeed. You can see the 'sugar refinery' in the centre of layout..everything to the left of that is as is now, and everything to the right of it is the fabulous future. Massive investment afoot.
One of the obvious reasons why Dover hugely needs the development at the western docks...because as ever we must keep up.

Looks like they are getting their bribe money back and keeping Calais too!

All the great political minds have put their heads together and come up with this one. Have any of them thought this through?
The gates of the secure zone have to be opened each time a truck wants to enter, each time that happens another bunch of thugs will force their way through.

You just need a long exposed funnelling area before the gates so you can see clearly, but still a ridiculous idea for such a complex situation.
My solution detain migrant, they claim asylum for the country they're in, if they won't do that ship them home if they won't declare home country then incarcerate them indefinitely. You make your bed you lay in it.

The situation is ridiculous where someone can break the law get caught and then be released to have another go. I was reading up the other day on the benefits not necessarily welfare between claiming asylum in the UK or France. All very complicated but the upshot to me was that the UK was better if there were children. These are mostly young single men so I would hazard a guess that the turn off in France is having an ID card with one's name and photo on, not very good if you are planning a career in crime or in the black economy.

If it was made known that all lorries were to be searched these illegal immigrants just might give up trying after a while.
Surely employing more Border Force workers would be cheaper than keeping these illegals and paying for their fight to stay here plus all the other costs involved.

It would a logistical impossibility to search every truck and car coming through however many border force officers were involved. There just isn't the space in the docks to do this, it would mean ferries would take ages to discharge then reload causing drastic price hikes on crossings and more costs to the hauliers. Besides the obvious worry of fresh produce going off most business operate on a "just in time " policy to cut down on warehousing costs. We have that problem as it is without making things worse.

Is that actually true Brian, if so it goes somewhere in explaining the 3 mile long tail backs leading up to Calais that leaves truckers as sitting ducks.
If applied in Dover the tailbacks would be on the ferries.

What should be made clear to the migrants waiting/trying to get into the U.K. is that they will NEVER be allowed to stay or settle here if they try the illegal route; if they apply in the legal way, their application will be considered, but definitely not if they try breaking into, onto, or under, lorries.

The fencing which is almost complete has deterred the illegals entering the port of Calais, hence the greater number trying the tunnel.Opening and closing the gate to the port would not be too much of a problem if done manually.
Every vehicle using Dunkirk is physically checked twice both inside and out which does cause delays but does deter illegals from using the port, I have yet to see an illegal there.
As I have said many times on this forum, if every truck company secured its vehicles as does the one I work for then you would not get any illegals coming through Dover except the ones known to the driver.
As I have also said Charlie was very keen prior to the election to take an interest, but now does not acknowledge my e-mails or phone messages.
