Stuart,
With respect, the opinion of the good burghers of Calais counts for nothing in this. As far as non-local politicians are concerned it's a tiny localised problem which rarely gets mentioned in National Newspapers or National broadcast news.
A couple of thousand non documented would-be emigrants is neither here nor there compared to the +100,000 asylum applications last year, the countless (and certainly uncounted) hordes flooding in from Italy, and the tented cities appearing on the boulevards and under the fly-overs of Paris.

I read an article a few years back that was translated from the French and it made clear that people living in Paris and other big cities referred sneeringly to the Nord Pas de Calais as English.
I get the distinct impression that most of our politicians irrespective of party allegiance dismiss Dover and its problems despite the best efforts of Charlie to highlight things.

Well, quotes from both The Sun and The Telegraph. I hardly need say more.
The opinions of the good burghers of Calais count for a great deal more than you realise. It's not simply an arithmetical calculation of votes but a myriad of perceptions and prejudices that run across France. I'd offer to take you to a back street haunt and let you tell them that their opinions count for nothing. However, I'm not fond of violence although the hospital over there is very good.
The tunnel remains supplied (I believe) by a software house in Marseilles. A few visits there proved very educational for me too. But then what do I know, eh?

#622 - I guess it's just like the Welling fans who would regularly chant at away games at Crabble "you're French and you know you are". Means bugger all though, of course.

As it is a Calais problem let the French sort it, we have done enough financially to sort their problem.
If the border did return to Dover we could and should simply return the illegals on the next ferry just like we did years ago to those without the correct paperwork.

No we didn't. I was there. Once the magic word 'asylum' had been heard we were stuffed.

In that case how come my husband would come home and tell me that they had had illegals on board that were escorted back to either Calais or whichever port they had originally sailed from.

Because they had not 'learned' to claim asylum. In the eighties/nineties there was a huge increase in asylum applications covering groups of people who would never have been considered under a stricter interpretation of what was originally intended by the UN back in 1951 plus it became widely known by the punters that asylum applications, however frivolous, would be dealt with whilst applicant remained in UK.

It pains me to say it, but I agree with our fishy friend on this point. As many of my old acquaintances in Immigration used to delight in telling me in those days - if someone presented themselves claiming asylum it was a question of who had to rush to the toilet first.

Obviously more fake news, we all know that Sweden’s new multiculturalism project is a shining example of how well people from totally different cultures can rub along with each other in mutual respect and harmony.

Odd that normally clear-eyed, objective contributors could be taken in by the guff on Zero Hedge. Must have been a quiet day on Breitbart.

Speaking with a friend of mine who lives in Malmo, she says that in the area in which she lives, their are knife fights daily, and its becoming dangerous just to go shopping at certain times. She actually got caught up in one of these altercations at one point, very frightening. Rumour has it that these fall outs are between local biker gangs and recent immigrants who are trying to take over the biker gangs drug dealerships.

Probably yet more fake news Howard. After all, it’s actually in the froggies best interest to keep all those nice illegals ( or whatever you want to call them ) wandering around Calais isn’t it?

Righteous indignation at its best. This is the French departure point to a non-Schengen country. Why should they care? It's our guys who do the policing even if it is in France (which it very nearly wouldn't have been for much longer had we not coughed up even more dosh). The French point of view is very clear to those who have made the effort to understand it. They have taken in thousands more refugees that the UK. They have an equally pressing terrorism problem (perhaps even more so) than the UK. They are not going to worry about the hard core who are so determined to get to our shores that they will risk any deprivation or danger to do it.
Wouldn't it be interesting if the boot were on the other foot?
One of the many aspects that will make Brexit and the island of Ireland very interesting this year.
