This lady popular with some, unpopular with others has died of a stroke this morning, just been on BBC news

I try to be neutral and polite but it is hard and getting even more difficult at times.

Yes - just beat me to it.
A great lady to whom we all owe a great debt.
She saved this country from a terminal economic decline in the 1960's and 1970's.
We need her strength and clarity of vision in No10 right now.

Admire her or hate her, no one could deny her impact and influence on the UK economically, socially and politically.

Yes but the economy was in great shape when she left no. 10.

Leaving politics out of it, although there is no doubt, as BarryW says, she saved this country from decline, she was a lovely lovely lady.
Her kindness to everyone she met, be it children, oaps or anyone in between, could not be faulted. She was genuinely interested in people and showed it.
Rest in peace Maggie Thatcher, you will be remembered for many things, but above all you were a lady.<3

There will no doubt be some crass political statements from disrespectful half wits, but she was a strong leader of this country, something that we have sorely lacked since from either party. A state funeral may be too much, especially given the situation our country is currently in, but she should be honoured by respect from all parties.

Here here Paul, I totally agree with you. A sad day.

Leaving Politicks out of it, the lady was a politician!
Jacqui I think you need to go to specsavers
She soled of the UK utilities and dismantled British industry.
Slung the baby out with the bath water, to give us a bent financial service sector, And helped us in to the EU
Look haw that's all ended up.

I shall refrain from comments that would not be tasteful in light of some comments above.
But you cannot avoid politics as she was a politician

KeithB - look back at the 1960's and 1970's, consider the immense abuse of power from the Trade Unions, the massive subsidies to whole inefficient industries producing goods that no-one wanted to buy. Remember the 3 month wait to get a phone from the Post Office and the lack of choice and options. Think about all those strikes and power cuts, the £50 limit on spending abroad on holiday. Britain was in terminal decline, the Conservative governments in the 50's failed to reverse it, Heath did his u-turn and failed dismally. Britain then was about managed decline only. Many claim the country was even ungovernable without Union permission....
Mrs T changed all that for the better. You should remove your rose coloured glasses about the old State monopolies as they were part and parcel of that pattern of decline. Monstrous monopolies that were not fit for purpose.
She was our greatest peacetime prime minister. A conviction politician who said what she meant and did what she said. If she thought it right (and she was right 90% of the time) she stuck to her guns and di what was necessary.
She had her failures, yes, but no-one whop achieves great things does so without their failures too. The only way to avoid them is to do nothing.
Incidentally Keith - referring to your last comment regarding the financial sector. She was the person who introduced regulation into the retail side of financial services that resulted in it being cleaned up, it was that legislation that got redress over pension mis-selling and endowment mis-selling for instance. It was Labour who messed up regulation in 1997 that led directly to the bank issues we have now. Financial services is a massive revenue earner for the UK and contributes a massive amount to the Treasury.

Yes I know Keith Sansum but she was also a woman, which was my point.
Thanks for your restraint though, I know how you feel but respect costs nothing - as you have proved.
You're a gent.

My thoughts are with the family of Baroness Thatcher's for their loss.
The future is what you make it. If you want a change, make it happen. Don't become a victim of procrastination. Live life to the full, always!

My respect Barry is more for the German model adopted in them times.
British miss management was equally to blame as the bob crows of the UK
Investment in industry fit management and planning for the good of the UK economy.
Instead of the venom and hatred of ordinary workers, that was displayed in them times
The German model she rejected in favour of simplified non intervention market forces

Actually Keith, you make an interesting point but your comparison with Germany should go back further.
It was the Adenhauer (
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Konrad_Adenauer) governments that laid the foundation for Germany's post-war success based on the economic principals of the Austrian school. Over that period in the UK we based our economy on the theories of Keynes. Needless to say that it was Germany (from a low base) whose economy was the most successful in Europe post-war. While we were declining.
Mrs T in 1979 rejected failed Kenseyan policies in favour of the Austrian school in 1979 and laid the foundation of the UK recovery.
Then Germany after reunification lost its way until it reformed its labour laws on the Thatcher model while at the same time Major/Blair and Brown moved us back the other way!!!
So you see Germany's success was the result of Thatcherite style of policies intially but before her day and then again the more recent Thatcherite reforms hold them in good stead in today's crisis!!!
