alan
it was kent county council that had concerns about the three events, making the point that dates are set years in advance.
the cove from kent police was confident that life would continue as normal due to the timings of events.
Thank you Howard glad to see the Aliens did not take you, but the news did say DDC as Nigil was on the panel so they got it wrong as well as me, Old age catching me up fast.

they are expecting 300,000 at the golf over the 4 days let's hope that they go away with a good impression of east kent and spread the word to their friends.

I'll buy you a pint too David.
They certainly don't seem to have any idea how to help move Dover forward or actually support the businesses here.
It's not just about signing up businesses, it a bigger picture, where the businesses want to know what they will be getting for their membership fee and what the C of C (or their representative in Town) are doing on the ground-floor to make Dover a brighter, cleaner, more welcoming Town and one that is a destination for tourists.

you don't hear many good things said about the chamber, i have spoken to various local small businesses over time and they don't see any advantages in joining up.

Sue.
Not so positive for some, my friend Bruce opened a Sandwich Bar in Sandwich, (no pun intended), last week, just in time for the Open. Last week he received several big orders for sandwiches' pies etc, for all 5 days, to supply the many workers who cannot afford to pay the £14.50 cost of a bag of fish & chips.
Today he was told that order is now in jeopardy due to a new policy of not allowing re-entry to the course. IE. The workers are not allowed to leave the course during the day and return to continue their work; they must remain on site and be subjected to exorbitant prices.
Same old story, small business and workers, paying the price yet again.

Just a thought could your mate get the sarnies delivered to the workers.? May help save his order. But it's a shame to lose 5 days of orders to the over priced bureaucratic buttie brigade.
Good luck to your mate in his enterprise

Just back from a few days in London and have to say that Dover is most certainly not looking its best for The Open. The appalling traffic at the Roundhill Tunnels (wait until the school's break up!) is likely to irritate many visitors arriving by car. Dover Town itself is awash with road works of all manner (gas, sewers, etc), and the fountain in the market square is fenced off. At a time when there may be visitors in the town, it certainly doesn't give the impression of a town working hard to appeal to visitors.

Marek,
They are looking for ways around this stupid decision. He could pay the £60.00 entrance fee, per day but technically, he does not have a licence to sell food at course and I don't think they would allow him in to sell them anyway, so apart from the cost being intrusive, I don't think that's the answer.
He could open at 4am, for workers to pick up sarnies on way to work but eating an 8 hour old egg sandwich, at 12 noon, doesn't sound appetizing does it?

Good old bribery...a cock and hen to the gatekeeper allowing him to enter and exit after selling his wares failing that pass them over the fence.
As for 8 hour old sarnies they'd be fresh in comparison to the ones being sold on the course which I wager are at least 24 hours old.

no comment on the visit kent then?
is it really making an impact in Dover apart from the extra traffic on the roads and idiots following sat navs rather than watching road signs and cutting us all up? do we get a tangiable figure of extra income to the district... ?
Don't get me started about the bloody traffic coming home. I ended up having to go through sodding Sandgate as the cars and lorries were backed up way past J12 and the Cheriton roundabout was queuing to get off into Cheriton. And the square is a joke. FFS doesn't ANYONE in power have eyes?

when you drove through sandgate did you stop perchance to test out the new state of the art pissoirs?
I didn't have a leg to stand on, Howard.......
To add to some the potential travel issues over the weekend the mainline from canterbury to dover is closed both saturday and sunday and has a replacment bus service , hows that for good planning ? I feel sorry for the station staff.

Thanks for the information, Sarah P. You couldn't make it up! Congratulations Southeastern and Network Rail. Another masterpiece of planning.

Seems my thoughts on the chamber are pretty widespread. I have nothing against individuals but you have to ask what is the point of it all?
A couple of months back I was at Deal Town Hall and a man from the R&A did a talk on the Open and the benefits to the area, after all its the 3rd most watched sports event in the world on tv, after the World Cup and Olympics. He said he first came to Dover in 1945 when it was recovering from the shelling and that it hasn't changed a bit.
Most people laughed but I didn't find it funny. Deal and Sandwich are vibrant and busy, we've got nothing but promises and empty sites.
