I thought it would be an idea to start a thread on this subject .I have just returned from a reception at The Royal St Georges Golf Club
I was amazed at all the prepartion for such an event .It was an eye opener .
We are very fortunate to have this event in our district .Driving through to Sandwich I thought to myself what a beautiful district this is .
A lot of hard work goes on to stage such an event .
It is true - a real event, but there hasn't been much fanfare locally sadly. I hope the coverage picks up, it's a lovely event to come to our district. Really good to have.

This is global event, where the World's TV and radio will be here. It's a pity that there isn't any work done on brightening up the Town (Dover that is - I'm sure Sandwich has had a bit of a spit and polish).
Do we know if there are any tourism leaflets around for our historic sites and attractions; perhaps a table in a tent for them and local businesses to display information about themselves.
With about 200,000 visitors expected, it is an opportunity to high-light everything we have here; it could encourage future visitors too.
I guess all that is difficult to do when there is no one employed to do it.

another problem is that when people enter the course they cannot get a pass out to come back in later.
traders in sandwich are up in arms about it.

Our Leader is hosting lunches everyday with the great and the good .Im also trying to spread the word in my capicity .Its been logged on here so come on folks sit up the eyes of the world are upon us .
By the way how lovely the flowers look in Market Square .The beds were left fallow and replenshid and now we ha ve a mar vellous display .
I am sure many people would like the opportunity to sit up and bask in the glory that is Dover when the eyes of the world swivel on to us..............perhaps we may have the fight our way past the Great and the Good?

Bern I think a lot of people do visit the area during Open week .,with caravans and motor homes. There were several already parked in fields nearby .A lot of people aqre coming daily using the High Speed train which is stopping at Sandwich during the event .
Sorry Sue, I don't think we are showing Dover at what could be its best. We walked back from the seafront a couple of days ago and the shabby neglect of those houses and shops around the underpass and road are disgraceful. The seafront is fabulous, and there is much to offer, but it isn't sold well at all.

Bern I hear what you are saying .I was at Dover College Prize Giving on Thursday ,many of the pupils parents live ouside of our District .I was busy selling the District to them .
Im the Chairman of the District we have Town Mayors and Councillors who also try to sell their Town .
A lot of people are put off by the site of people drinking outside Some of the behaviout leaves a lot to be desired .
A lot of the property near the underpass is in private ownership .I believe DHB own some of the sites
There are thirty two Parish Councils and Three Towns in our District and some really help themselves .Preston near Wingham lovely village ,Denton many hidden gems
If the moral of the people who liver in Dover and pride restored maybe a difference will be made
Thats what our Leader will be doing poor choice of words Great and the Good .He will be talking to people who hopefully will bring inward investment to our town /

I agree Bern, I walked back from the Market Square the other day and there was one really awful looking empty shop that gave such a run down impression to the whole street.
If a place is clean and tidy it deters others from spoiling that look. When there is rubbish blowing around and weeds growing out of pavements and gutters that is not a good start it gives a we do not care impression.
I do wish schools could do more to instil the do not drop litter idea into pupils heads, so many parents do not seem to bother anymore.

I try to be neutral and polite but it is hard and getting even more difficult at times.

The example of some adults is unhelpful. I had to restrain myself the other day when a Waynetta casually dropped some fast food paper on the floor swiftly followed by cigarette de tritus. Not like me - I sometimes pick the stuff up and hand it back to the perp.

david foley of the thanet and east kent chamber of commerce has advised traders in sandwich to open early and close late during the championship.
i don't see the logic visitors will have their breakfast at the hotel and in the evening will either dine at their hotel or go to a restaurant that would be open at any time of the year.

Bern/JanH, I know exactly what you mean. I walked down that way last weekend with family over from Ireland to show them the new seafront and they were horrified by the state of these shops/buildings in comparison to our lovely seafront. Its such a shame that parts of the town are so neglected, surely something could be put in place to start cleaning it up once and for all.
It is indeed great to have the Open back in our district again. I have just returned from there, the preparations that went on behind the scenes over the last week were enormous. BarryWS is there looking after the players over the coming week.

I could say so much, but as I have already done so in the past, it seems pointless repeating myself. Broken record some would say.

The chamber of commerce are advising traders to open early and close late?
I bet they hadn't thought of that and they're very grateful for the advice.
What is the point of the c of c?
