Just one example of graffiti damage hidden in the moats. There are numerous examples of this kind of thing along the length of the concealed flint and brick walls between North Entrance and Detached Bastion. Once applied, this is nearly impossible to completely remove.

Do you actually know that DDC have already applied for funding for maintenance work on the Heights, Alexander ?

I'm sure that many local yoofs would know who painted that. It's an impressive piece of calligraphy, what a shame he put it up on the Heights.

#1520 - you reallly have no interest in what WHPS had done, whay they do, what they are planning on doing, and any bases that can be built on.
Why would DDC be applying for any money for work on English Heritage property that isn't their responsibility. DDC has no money and doesn't have the funds to be able to match fund any grant applications.
Why do you think a 'new group' will get any further than WHPS, who already know how things work and have ideas of costs?
Been nice knowing you :)

I have found the best way to remove plants that are growing out of a wall is to cut them back and then liberally paint the cut area with brushwood killer, this method certainly killed the well established old ivy that was well established and damaging a flint wall. The same could possibly be done to the damaging plants up at WH it would certainly damage the walls if anyone tried to pull them out.

Seems an appropriate time for some more history.....
About 3/4 years ago WHPS started some work on tiding up the Redoubt dicthes. Plants and bushes cut back, rubble eventually removed, and we started to take down the ivy which penetrates and eventually blows out bricks on the walls
We get an urgent message to STOP REMOVING IVY from EH !! We are told of a two year study, with the Heights as a key player, in examining the effects of ivy on heritage with a top university.
The conclusion is that ivy can act as a shield from heat that can damage brickwork, but if the walls are damaged it can actually do more damage - common sense eh?
So EH tell us we are not to remove any more ivy from walls and we are only able to prune back to a % each year, because there is no money available to repoint the mortar once the bricks are removed - this then goes back to them spending £250k on just the outside of the Redoubt.
Two further years of negotiation and we now have some permission to remove limited growth inside the Redoubt, a job likely to need expensive materials and sdaffold towers.
In reply to Jan - unfortunately 'plants' in the walls are in places TREES with diameters over ONE FOOT and are not uncommon and individually probably will costs thousands of pounds to remove and repair the damage made,

So with your 'grand scheme' which say comes up with a bag of fag packet calculation for £4million to carry out all the works, required £1million of match funding.
Where do you plan to get that match funding money from as DDC finances are rather dire and EH don't have the funds?

Not p*****g on your bonfire, but where are the tens of thousands of pounds to produce the professional plans that are required if you expect EH to take you seriously going to come from?
As I have said consider the current WCCP lottery application for £2.2 million or so has been a couple of years of hard graft for a full time person...

all getting very heated meaning many posters give it a wide berth. see it on other threads too.
this is the only place where discussion on the future of the western heights is taking place we need to keep it civil so that all interested parties feel free to contribute.

In Howard's vain, the original questions were I think:
1. Would a National war memorial be suitable and good for Dover & Western Heights ?
&
2. Would the CGI proposals for building domestic or commercial properties on Western Heights be good for the Town and Heights ?
Paul B - can you make a poll on this forum ?!

As they are trees Paul hammer some old copper nails or small bore pipe in, it will take longer but is just as effective.
Howard, I have yet to read anything on here that would stop me posting also I am sure that such an important site as WH is bound to be discussed somewhere else.

We did that before Jeff (#1531) and the opinions were:
- that the vast majority were in favour of the war memorial (with the main exception of Alexander)
- about 95% of people were happy to consider some sort of development on the Heights IF it could secure the heritage in the long term

#1530 Not heated, honest!
I'd imagine people are getting bored (as I am) as there are so many circular discussions, unanswered questions and contradicts in the postings, in particular from Alexander.
From the start I have been as open as I can and my opinions haven't changed from page 1 of this thread
I (and others) are giving sensible meaningful advice on how you deal with Scheduled Ancient Monuments both from a heritage angle and a from the nature side. We have explained how difficult it is dealing with the problems/organisations and how WHPS has battled for the past 12+ years to actually make inroads into trying to improve and raise the profile of the Heights.
I don't really care that a 'rival' group is being talked about as it is the heritage that matters, but exactly the same problems and brick walls will be hit, getting funding won't easy, keeping hold of volunteers won't easy, getting interest from the town won't easy, getting respect for the heritage won't easy.
So I can't really understand why people would not want to work with a group with all of the experiences and knockbacks that WHPS have achieved and suffered.....

In answer to Jeff on 1531, I PERSONALLY feel that a war memorial is the last thing we need on the Heights and a definite no to domestic or commercial property.

OK, thanks Paul-aka-Whatever. Have to admit haven't read every single word on the 77 pages ! Just the main points.
And yes, there too many circular arguments with quite a lot of sensible, realistic points being made.

Re Howards post re 1530 yes keep it relaxed guys. People do avoid posting on it when it gets a bit nasty, and as we already know and we have stated before... people in the wider arena are looking in...this thread already been featured in at least one newspaper.
So keep it friendly...on all threads. The clubhouse spirit n all that.
