CCTV upgrade set to power up town centres of the future

Wednesday, 27 February 2019
Dover District Council is to invest £280,000 in a major CCTV upgrade as part of its latest plans to support the district’s town centres. The investment will see new digital technology replacing existing cameras across Dover, Deal, and Sandwich, along with the introduction of the first CCTV cameras in Aylesham. The new technology also enables future investment in town centre Wi-Fi.

Dover District Council has awarded the contract for the CCTV system upgrade to Eurovia Infrastructure Ltd following an OJEU competitive tender.

Cllr MJ Holloway, Cabinet Member for Community Services, said:  "We’re committed to investing in our town centres so that they remain the focus of community life where people feel safe and comfortable to shop and enjoy their leisure time.  The upgrade of our district-wide CCTV system will play a key role in preventing crime, monitoring local traffic, and keeping people safe in our town centres.

"We’re also looking to the future and seeing how we can use new technology to meet the challenges of our changing shopping habits.  Moving to a digitally based CCTV system is the first step on our journey to connect all our town centres with public access Wi-Fi, connecting shoppers with ‘Click and Collect’ and opening up the district to the thousands of tourists who flock here each year, many of whom now use tablets and smart phones to go online to explore the destination and find local attractions and restaurants."

Phil Skegg, Managing Director, Eurovia Infrastructure, said: "I am pleased that we have secured such a significant contract with Dover District Council and we look forward to working alongside them as we continue to grow in the security and surveillance sector."

All three towns, along with Aylesham, will see a major upgrade of the CCTV system operated by Dover District Council.  This sees the replacement of the outdated analogue cameras system with a new wireless system offering enhanced digital picture quality and data storage. As part of the investment, the CCTV control room will also be upgraded.
