New apprentices welcomed at Dover District Council

Tuesday, 1 September 2015
As part of their commitment to support opportunities for young people, the Chairman of Dover District Council has welcomed two new apprentices who started at the Council today.

Lillie Wadhams, 16, and Elliott Allen, 18, were welcomed to the DDC offices in Whitfield - they are both completing Business and Administration courses through East Kent College, and Lillie is working with the DDC Finance team, while Elliott is with the DDC Communication and Engagement team.

The Up on the Downs Landscape Partnership Scheme, which is based at Dover District Council has recently recruited a new apprentice. DDC is also funding two new apprentices at East Kent Housing. Two of last year's apprentices at the Council now have full time employment with our Democratic Services and Properties teams.

Apprenticeships combine practical training in a job with study. As an apprentice, young people work alongside experienced staff, gain job-specific skills, earn a wage and get holiday pay, and study towards a related qualification.

Cllr Sue Chandler, Chairman of Dover District Council said: "We are delighted to welcome Lillie and Elliott today. Apprenticeships provide an excellent opportunity for young people to learn, and for employers to benefit from the fantastic range of talents and ideas that young people bring with them. I am particularly keen to continue to encourage and celebrate the talents of younger people, and it is vital we continue to work to provide opportunities for our youth for the future. We are very pleased to be working with East Kent College to support these apprenticeships."

Lillie said: "It's great to be given this opportunity at the Council, and I'm very much looking forward to working through the apprenticeship programme."

Elliott said: "It was a pleasure to meet the Chairman, Cllr Chandler, and it was great to get an insight into who we will be working with."
