Fly a Flag for the Commonwealth

Monday, 3 March 2014
For the first time ever, local authorities and civic dignitaries, community groups and charities throughout the British Isles are taking part in local flag raising events and ceremonies of dedication to mark Commonwealth Day - and an event is being held at Dover District Council offices in Whitfield at 9.50am on Monday 10 March 2014.

A specially written Commonwealth Affirmation will be read out by the Chairman of Dover District Council, Cllr Sue Nicholas, before the raising of the Commonwealth Flag. There will also be a short speech by the Leader of Dover District Council, Cllr Paul Watkins. The event will end with the raising of the Commonwealth Flag at 10am.

"This will be the largest single raising of the Commonwealth Flag in the history of the Commonwealth" said Bruno Peak, LVO OBE OPR, Pageantmaster and originator of Flag a Flag for the Commonwealth.

Cllr Sue Nicholas, Chairman of Dover District Council said: "We are delighted to be taking part in this ceremony. This event will enable us to join with others nationwide to show a public expression of commitment to the Commonwealth, and an appreciation of the opportunities offered to its citizens around the world."
