Dover Gym Club riding high on wave of success

In the space of just five weeks youngsters from Dover Gymnastics Club have won 53 medals, including 24 Golds, 10 Silvers and 19 Bronzes, and 12 gymnasts have become Kent Champions.

It has been an extremely busy few weeks for the club, based at Poulton Close in Dover, who have taken part in four competitions over five weekends.

At The Meapa Gym Club competition in Gravesend on 10 and 11 May, 49 gymnasts from Dover Gym Club's Floor & Vault and Women's Artistic Squads took part, and 14 came back with medals: five Golds, five Silver and three Bronzes.

Two weeks later, Dover Gym Club hosted a Boys Floor & Vault Competition which attracted clubs from across Kent and even a club from Hastings. Once again, Dover Gymnasts did their club and town proud winning three Gold, four Silvers and three Bronze medals.

On 7 and 8 June Dover's gymnasts took part in the Kent Floor & Vault Championships at Mote Park in Maidstone where they competed against 17 other clubs from across the county. No less than eight youngsters from Dover became Kent Champions, each winning a gold medal and scoring the highest results in the respective age groups and levels. There was also one silver medal and three bronze medals.

The gymnasts who became Kent Floor & Vault Champions were:

  • Alan Richards - Bronze Boys level champion
  • Camille Lasbareilles - Silver girls (14+) champion
  • Samantha Wharton - Silver girls (11-14) champion
  • Jade Card - Intermediate Girls (10 yrs) champion
  • Jessica Green - Intermediate Girls (8-9) champion
  • Skye Witte - Novice Girls (10) champion
  • Shannon Carroll - Key Step (7 yr) champion
  • Louis Parker-Gorman - Novice boys (9 - 10) champion

And in the Kent Women's Artistic Twin Piece and Individual competition held at Tunbridge Wells on 15 June, gymnasts achieved nine Gold, 10 Silver and four Bronze medals. Four Dover gymnasts also became Kent Champions:

  • Level 5 - Ursula Wright - Gold medal and Kent champion. Also awarded another Gold medal for achieving highest score on Vault.
  • Level 4 - Ellie McLeavey - Gold medal and Kent champion. Also awarded another Gold medal for achieving highest score on Vault.
  • Modified 4 - Lauren Colquhoun - Gold medal and Kent champion, also awarded bronze medal for third highest score on Bars.
  • Modified 3 - Olivia Bartlett - Gold medal and Kent champion, also awarded Gold medals for achieving highest scores on Vault and Bars and Bronze medals for achieving third highest scores on Beam and Floor.

To top off the recent run of success, some of the volunteers who help to run the club were recognised with accolades at the Kent Gymnastics Awards Ceremony held at Kings Hill Golf Club on 3 June.

Senior Coach Fern Parnell received a Long Service Award for many years dedicated to the club.

17-year-old Abbie Langley and 18-year-old Emily Martin were Highly Commended as Young Volunteers of the Year.

Chairman Frank Critcher and Director Alison Martin were awarded Adult Volunteers of the Year and highly commended.

And Vice Chairman Jon Green and Alison Martin also received awards for Special Services to Gymnastics in recognition of the work they have done developing Floor & Vault opportunities in the county.

Chairman Frank Critcher said: "It has been an amazing few weeks with some excellent results at competitions and many of our gymnasts becoming Kent Champions.

"I'd like to say a huge well done to all of our gymnasts who've done themselves and Dover proud, and also thank you to all of our fantastic coaches who work so hard with the youngsters helping them to achieve their potential.

"It was also nice for some of our volunteers to be recognised at the Awards Ceremony. Volunteers are the unsung heroes, without whom there wouldn't be a club."
