Port of Dover puts energy into student visit

Friday, 28 June 2013
This week, the Port of Dover hosted ten students from the School of Engineering at Cranfield University as part of the Port's commitment to its Youth Engagement Scheme (YES). The students, who are currently studying for an MSc in Energy Systems and Thermal Processes, visited the Port at the start of a collaboration with the Port's environmental and engineering teams in order to carry out two energy audits on energy processes and buildings within the Eastern and Western Docks.

The aim for the exercise is to give students an opportunity to experience a real life environment and a taste of what it is like to work in Europe's busiest RoRo Port and Britain's second busiest cruise port.

Vicki Jago, Environmental Manager at the Port of Dover said: "The Port of Dover remains at the forefront of best environmental practice within the industry and collaboration with Universities allows students to practically apply the knowledge they have obtained in environmental management and energy process whilst experiencing an operational working environment."

The students, working in two project groups, began conducting energy audits at Dover Cruise Port's Terminal Two (CT2) and Passenger Services Building West (PSB West) which houses food and beverage outlets for ferry passengers in the Eastern Docks. The work requires an understanding of all the energy processes that take place within these buildings so that recommendations for improvements can be made.

Ilai Sher, B.Sc. (Eng.), PH.D. Director of Applied Thermodynamics and Energy Systems said: "We are extremely grateful to the team at the Port of Dover for offering our students the opportunity to undertake these energy audits. This collaboration with Dover not only enabled the students to gain first hand practical knowledge within an operational environment but also with an organisation that demonstrates an excellence in and ongoing commitment to environmental issues and energy reduction."
