Motorists advised to lock their vehicles

Tuesday, 2 July 2013
Motorists in Dover and Deal and the surrounding rural areas are being advised to always lock their vehicles to deter opportunist thieves.

Of the 33 crimes of theft from motor vehicle in the Dover district reported during the month of June 2013, 15 had been left unlocked by the owners.

Items including cash, handbags, mobile phones, sat navs and music players have been stolen from vehicles that have been left insecure.

Hiding items does not deter an opportunist thief as Inspector Mark Weller explains: "Thieves will look in glove boxes, under seats and in the boot and will take any valuables they find.

"Thieves will also go for the easy option of an unlocked car. I find it astonishing that almost half the vehicles targeted had not been locked by their owners.

"The best way to avoid becoming a victim of car crime is not leave anything of value inside and to close all windows and lock all doors, and use an alarm if you have one.

"Even if you're just nipping into a shop or to pay for fuel or do the school-run, never leave keys in the ignition or windows or sun roof ajar.

"Try and use car parks displaying the Park Mark sign and wherever you park choose and area that's in view from passers-by and well lit."

Officers will be looking out for insecure vehicles while on patrol to advise owners and making enquiries to catch the offenders.

Anyone who sees anyone acting suspiciously or has information about car crime is asked to phone Kent Police on 101. Alternatively if you have information but would prefer to remain anonymous call Kent Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
