Border Force seizes cocaine on banana boat

Monday, 12 August 2013
Border Force officers are investigating after they seized 40 kilos of cocaine from a cargo ship at Dover on Tuesday, 6 August 2013.

The drugs, once cut and sold on the streets, have a potential value running into millions of pounds.

Officers from Border Force's national deep rummage team found the drugs in one of the offices on board when they searched the MV Santa Lucia carrying bananas from Willemstad, Curacao.

There were no arrests and the ship was allowed to continue its journey. Enquiries by Border Force investigators are continuing.

Paul Morgan, director of Border Force South East and Europe said: "Border Force officers are on constant alert to keep illegal drugs and other banned substances out of the UK.

"We are determined to prevent this terrible trade which can have such a destructive impact on the lives of so many."
