Pupils campaign for safe parking

Monday, 9 July 2012
"Keep us safe and don't park on the zigzag lines outside our school" was the clear message from pupils at a Dover primary school.

The Whitfield and Aspen Primary School youngsters were on patrol outside their school in Mayfield Road on Tuesday (3 July 2012) giving out leaflets about safe parking and not using a mobile phone whilst at the wheel.

Police community support officer Jacqui Brook said: "One person did stop whilst we were on patrol but very quickly moved off! Lots of parents were very keen to know what we were doing and very supportive of the youngsters' involvement.

"As with many things, it is just the small minority who are in a rush and park close to the school. We hope that seeing the pupils on patrol in their high visibility jackets will help drive the message home that it is the lives of the children that they are risking."

Kent Police and Kent Highway Services are helping schools by working with pupils who are training as Junior Road Safety Officers (JRSOs). Special assemblies are being held, such as about the importance of wearing seatbelts and letters sent to parents.
