Port of Dover donation helps keep White Cliffs safe for the Nation

Wednesday, 7 November 2012
The Port of Dover, which has been working closely with the National Trust in support of its 'Save the Cliffs' campaign, has made a £200,000 donation that will ensure that the White Cliffs of Dover, an iconic and internationally recognised landmark, will rest in the safe hands of the body established to protect the nation's heritage.

Bob Goldfield, Chief Executive, Port of Dover, said: "I am very pleased that by enabling the National Trust to meet their target early, we have played a part in ensuring that the White Cliffs of Dover, an internationally renowned element of the UK's history and identity, will remain a national treasure for the enjoyment of all."

The donation not only keeps the Cliffs safe for the nation in perpetuity but helps the National Trust in other ways by enabling it to properly maintain and protect them in the years to come.

Bob Goldfield added: "It was very important to us that our donation would assist the Trust in its ability to maintain and protect the Cliffs, thereby ensuring a real and lasting legacy."

The National Trust has thanked the Port of Dover for helping to save one of Britain's great landmarks. David Coleman, Chair of the National Trust's Regional Advisory Board, said: "The White Cliffs of Dover are synonymous with everything that this great land of ours represents.

"Dover Harbour Board's particular generosity together with the donations from thousands of appeal supporters have allowed us to ensure this great symbol of our nation is safe and protected forever for the enjoyment of everyone."
