Man jailed for steroid smuggling attempt through Dover

A Polish man living in Swindon was sentenced to 15 months in prison at Canterbury Crown Court on 6 January after being found guilty of attempting to smuggle approximately 21,000 phials of steroids into the UK through Dover.

UK Border Agency officers stopped and questioned Wojciech Brzeski on 14 April 2011 at the inward tourist controls at Dover Eastern docks. During the search of the British-registered Ford Mondeo he was driving officers found boxes of phials containing steroids inside bags in the boot of the car.

The phials, each containing one millilitre of steroid, were tested and found to contain either Testosterone or Nandrolone with a total potential street value of up to £189,000.

Brzeski was charged with the attempted importation, and was found guilty by a jury at Canterbury Crown Court on 6 January before being jailed the same day.

"The abuse of anabolic steroids is harmful and we are committed to stopping them from being smuggled into the country.

"This case demonstrates to anyone considering smuggling drugs that they will be taken to court and will face prison."
