Dover Town Council complete phase 1 of improvements to the town centre

Monday, 2 July 2012
Dover Town Council have now completed phase 1 of a programme of improvements to the town centre. As part of the 2012 and Beyond working group's initiative to smarten up the town centre, bollards and seating through the precinct have now been painted blue with gold crests.

The Town Council is keen to create a smart look throughout the town centre that is distinctive to Dover. This will be the first of many projects that will see the town centre looking better, brighter and generally more welcoming.

Cllr Mrs Jones, Chairman of the 2012 & beyond Working Group, said: "The black bollards in the precinct were looking very tired and in need of a repaint. They were also identical to those in a number of other towns, so the Town Council were keen to introduce a new colour that was reflective of Dover's nautical background, blue was both a popular and appropriate choice".

Plans are now underway to provide blue covers for the bins and get other street furniture to match the bollards and seating. Discussions with KCC and DDC to audit the signage, improve seating and refurbish the precinct lamp posts will take place in the autumn and the refurbishment of the East Cliff toilets is in the contract stage.

Mrs Anne Smith, The Right Worshipful Mayor of Dover, commented: "Congratulations to everyone who has been involved in smartening up our precinct. The co-operation between councils, contractors and local volunteers has been so positive and means that there will be a lasting improvement to the town centre past the Jubilee and Torch relay".
