Street Dance Project

Friday, 15 October 2010
Dover District Community Safety Partnership continues to step up the pace in its work to engage with children and young people across the area - and has welcomed the success of the popular Street Dance Project in the St Radigunds area.

The CSP funded a pilot project in the area following feedback from young people who wanted to do something constructive and healthy. The Dover District Community Safety Unit has now agreed to fund further classes, and classes for primary school aged children are running until early 2011 at the Triangles Community Centre, 5-6pm Fridays.

The project is run by PACE Developments, and the pilot project was run to enable young people to gather in a safe environment, learn modern dance moves, keep fit and enjoy themselves at the same time. The CSP agreed to fund classes following the success of sport leadership programmes in other areas, which it has also funded.

The project follows close partnership working and support across a range of agencies, including KCC Community Wardens and Police Community Support Officers - with PCSO Tracy Brittenden winning a Safer Kent award for her work on the project. The Community Development Team at DDC continues to work with the community and organisers to look at ways of securing further funding to help classes continue for 13-19 year-olds, as part of its ongoing work with community groups across the district.

Chairman of the Dover District Community Safety Partnership, Nadeem Aziz said: "We are very pleased at the success of this project. Classes have been well attended, and the tutors are very impressed with the standards. The initiative has had a very positive effect, and this is another example of partnership working for the community."
