100 Years Of Girl Guiding In Dover

Tuesday, 7 September 2010
As part of the centenary celebrations to mark the 100th anniversary of the Girl Guiding movement, Dover Museum is getting prepared to launch a special exhibition telling the story of Girl Guiding both locally and nationally.

The community-based exhibition runs from 8 October to 8 January 2011, and is being organised by Dover Museum with Dover Girl Guiding (South Foreland Division). Over the years, thousands of girls and young women from the Dover area have been involved with guiding, and the exhibition looks at a range of exciting activities, and the achievements of local members, from the very beginnings through to the modern day.

Visitors can learn about the impact guiding has made on Dover District, such as modern fundraising, international trips and community projects. The exhibition (including Rainbows, Brownies, Guides, Rangers, Senior Section and Trefoils) also features displays of historic and modern photographs, local archives, and objects such as uniforms, camping equipment and badges.

Jenny Winder, Dover Town Guiding Commissioner said: "This is a great chance for people to come along and find out more about guiding and why it has been so important to Dover. For 100 years we have been putting girls in the lead and supporting them to have life-changing experiences, whether that is learning about something new in their weekly meetings or travelling abroad to see other cultures."

The exhibition is part of Girlguiding UK's centenary celebrations that run from September 2009 to October 2010.
