Over 1 Million Cigarettes Seized At Port

A 42 year old lorry driver from Northwood, Middlesex, has been charged with attempting to smuggle 1.2 million cigarettes into the UK through Dover and evade excise duty of over £20,000. HM Revenue & Customs' (HMRC) officers are investigating the seizure.

On 26th September 2009, UK Border Agency (UKBA) officers intercepted a lorry that had arrived at Dover, on a ferry from Calais. The cigarettes were discovered during a search of the vehicle.

Darren Willoughby, of Iveagh Close, Northwood, Middlesex, was subsequently charged with duty evasion and released on bail. He is due to appear at Dover Magistrates court on 8th October 2009.
