Keeping On Track For Another Multi-Million Pound Regeneration Boost

Thursday, 2 April 2009
Dover District is keeping on track for another multi million pound boost for the future - following major news that the Government has invited a detailed bid for schemes totalling more than £5m for a range of transport improvements for the area.

The Government has announced £170m funding for 29 transport projects that will support the development of new housing. Another 26 schemes are being invited to submit full business cases for consideration for a further £30m from the Community Infrastructure Fund.

Schemes in the second round, invited to submit full business cases, include a £3.3m bid for improvements to Dover Priory, a £1.6m bid for junction improvements in Dover, and £1/2m bid for further investment in public transport in the district.

The funding is to deliver a range of new vital transport projects, as part of the Growth Areas and Growth Points programme. Growth Points are a Government initiative to provide support to communities who wish to pursue large scale and sustainable growth.

This latest news follows extensive work by a range of partners, including Dover District Council and Kent County Council. This comes as range of pivotal regeneration projects continue to move forward for the future, and as Dover prepares for the arrival of the High Speed Rail Link later this year.

Housing Minister Margaret Beckett said: "We know that good transport links are vital to successful communities and these projects will unlock the potential for new housing where it is needed."

Cllr Paul Watkins, Leader of Dover District Council said: "This is important news and we are working hard with Kent County Council and partners to bring a detailed business case together. Growth Point status is helping to provide the working finance to deliver regeneration and this is further positive news as a range of developments are brought together to reshape the future of the area."
