The Bombing Of The Royal Marines School Of Music

Wednesday, 16 September 2009
As we approach the twentieth anniversary of the IRA bombing at the Royal Marines Barracks in Deal on 22 September 1989, Dover Museum is running a special oral history project in remembrance of the eleven young men who were so tragically killed.

The Museum is asking members of the local community to get in touch if they have any memories or records of this day - or the days and weeks that followed it - and are willing to share them with researchers. Museum staff will be holding open days in the district so that people can drop in and talk, or can arrange for a more detailed record to be made of people's memories of that time.

The first open day will be held at Deal Parochial Church of England Primary School on 19 September 2009, between 2pm and 4pm. It is hoped a further open day will be held later in the year, details to be confirmed.

Information is being gathered with a view to producing a website and an exhibition. The project is being run by Dover Museum on behalf of Dover District Council and is funded by the Museums and Libraries Association as part of the Imperial War Museum's 'Their Past Your Future' project, which looks at 20th century conflict. Additional funding has also been generously provided by Deal Town Council and Walmer Parish Council.

For more information, or if you are unable to come along to the open day but have something you would wish to share with us, contact Dover Museum on 01304 201066 or email linda.mewes@dover.gov.uk.
