Former Norfolkline Employee Jailed For Heroin Smuggling

Wednesday, 3 December 2008
A former employee of Norfolkline ferries who tried to smuggle 90 kilos of heroin and 10 kilos of cocaine in three cases worth £4.5 million into the UK through the Port of Dover was jailed for eight years yesterday.

Stephen McNamee, 31, from Anglesey was intercepted by UK Border Agency (UKBA) detection officers as he drove at speed towards the crew dock exit gate wearing a high visibility vest on the 1st September 2008. A search of his vehicle was carried out and three cases were located within the car. Two were in the boot space and one was in the rear passenger footwell. Officers opened the cases and found taped packages of a brown powdered substance which when tested reacted positively to Heroin. HMRC officers then took over the investigation.

McNamee pleaded guilty at Canterbury Crown Court on 3rd November 2008 to being knowingly concerned in the importation of heroin and cocaine following an investigation by officers from HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC).

Malcolm Bragg, Assistant Director Criminal Investigation for HMRC said:

"Our investigators, working alongside detection officers from the UK Border Agency (UKBA) and prosecutors from Revenue & Customs Prosecution Office (RCPO) continue to play a key role in protecting communities by reducing the availability of drugs on UK streets. Our efforts will continue to reduce the devastating impact drugs have on individuals, local communities. We would encourage anyone with information relating to smuggled goods to contact the customs hotline number on 0800 59 5000 or email customs.hotline@hmrc.gov.uk."
